Enigmatic plunderphonic specialists The Bran FlakesRnotes
have been releasing music since 1996 (their debut
being I Remember When I Break Down, originally
issued on cassette), but have since made it as far
as Illegal Art, the label responsible for output of that
most modern of cut'n'paste artists, Girl Talk.

I Have Hands is an album made up of finely crafted
exotica collages - very much in the vein of Vicki
Bennett's People Like Us, but there's a greater
emphasis on all things cartoonish and slapstick here,
resulting in tracks like the Dolly Parton-sampling
'Stumble Out Of Bed', which chops 'Nine to Five'
into thin slices, looping idiotically through the opening
line of the song before dropping the chorus during the
fade-out. The album offers up countless instances
of chuckle-inducing silliness, with 'Singing Dogs'
being a particularly good example... mostly because
it involves singing dogs. Apparently, the estate of
Raymond Scott has given The Bran Flakes
permission to delve wholeheartedly into the electronic
innovator's archive for a centennial remix album
planned for later on this year, and 'Mini Mountain
Queen' offers a first taste of what we can expect
from the project, setting Scott's chirpy, buoyant
melodies against a spongy backbeat, stitched
together with a mainframe of bass arpeggiations.

Although I Have Hands isn't quite so intricately woven
as a People Like Us record, there's a real sense of joy
ingrained in its fabric. Lots of fun to be had here...
