A cursory look at the cover of Mike Bones' A Fool For Everyone may send the
casual music fan running and screaming for the proverbial hills. That's
because it's a shirtless shot of a hairy-chested man laying in bed and
wearing nothing but a sheet! It's a bit of a vivid, porno-chic and utterly
creepy image that's not for the faint of heart, but it's a harbinger of the
kind of odd music that Mike Bones makes. His tunes hover on the corner of
"Strange" and "Weird," so it makes perfect sense that the accompanying
artwork would be a bit of an eyebrow-raiser.
Bones is the alter ego of NYC guitarist Mike Strallow, who is known for his
prowess with an axe. A Fool For Everyone is his second attempt at a quirky,
abstract solo record where his weepy acoustic guitar and cryptic lyrics
appeal to hipsters and those music fans who like off-the-beaten path
singer-songwriters. Most of the album is of a moody and maudlin tempo, with
Bones strumming on his guitar and letting the words tumble out of his mouth
at their own pace and leisure. The result? A snoozy listen.
Bones' vocal delivery is somewhat akin to Bob Dylan but that doesn't mean
we're equating Bones to the folk icon. It's just that Bones mumbles in a low
register that is Dylan's signature and therein lies the only comparison
between these two artists. "One Moment's Peace" and "A Fool For Everyone" are
slow, subdued numbers, as is "What I Have Left," and that's how it goes for
most of the album's duration. A Fool For Everyone is a brew of coffeehouse
rock and shoegazing indie rock that will appeal to a specific audience who
drinks this genre by the bucketful. Like a shot of espresso or even
wheatgrass, the music of Mike Bones is an acquired taste favored by a select
few.
