██▌▄▀█ THE PAST: AK1200, America's original jungle/drum n ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ bass don has been pushing the sound since the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ music's initial incarnation as hardcore breakbeat. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ As one of the U.S.'s original proponents of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ breakbeat music, AK started DJing in 1989, playing ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ electro and other beat friendly music of that time. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ In 1990, he opened a record store in his hometown of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Orlando, FL called The Hottie Shoppe, where he began ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ developing relationships with burgeoning breakbeat ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ labels such as Suburban Base and Moving Shadow. Via ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ these early relationships, he quickly became known ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ in the UK as someone who could spread the message in ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ America, and by 1991, he was writing articles and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ reviews in the classic US Rave. Around this same ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ time, Dave Minner also gained his moniker as AK1200 ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ when fellow Floridian DJ Icey noticed the hyped-up ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ BPM's of the tunes Dave would play in The Hottie ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Shop, and said "You're playing so fast that you are ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ like an AK on the 1200's!" Icey started throwing ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ raves at The Edge and he would put "Dave AK1200 ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Minner" on the flyer. The name stuck ever since. In ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the later half of 1992, breakbeat music had ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ literally worn out its welcome within the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ underground scene, and was quickly replaced by ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Progressive House. At that point nearly everyone in ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the US hopped on the bandwagon, leaving but a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ handful of dedicated breakbeat enthusiasts. The ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ music itself took a much different direction by ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ becoming more dark and more underground, truly ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ weeding out the rest of the unfaithful. This is ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ where AK came full force, playing anywhere in the US ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ he could, for free even, just to spread the sound. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ As jungle developed, AK teamed up with DJ Jeffee on ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ a small magazine called Junglized, which quickly ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ became a nationwide must have for anyone who needed ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ his or her fix. Around this time, AK began traveling ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ to the UK (the music's homeland) quite a bit, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ getting more and more involved with this worldwide ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ scene. His first taste of production came in late 93 ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ by remixing a Flex and Fats track called "Somebody", ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ which was featured on Suburban Base and Moving ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Shadow's Joint series, making AK one of the first ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ American artists ever to see a release on a UK dnb ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ label. For the next few years, AK headlined the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ second room of countless parties throughout the US, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ continuing to make a name for himself. As Jungle ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ music evolved and became more popular, so did ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ AK1200. Also in 93, he was invited to the UK again, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ this time to DJ, and played alongside such greats as ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Hype, Mickey Finn, Swift and Zinc, Danny Breaks, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ SL2, and several others for a Christmas party for ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Suburban Base Recordings. AK was also the first ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ American to play on the UK's pirate radio, playing ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ alongside Swift and Zinc on Format FM. Back home in ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the US, Jungle was beginning to finally get its due, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ though still hated-on by many of the nations party ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ promoters, it was too big to be ignored. This is ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ when most of today's US jungle DJ's got their start. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ î95 and î96 was all about hardstep jungle and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ rudeboy ragga jump up, which even at that time was ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ very similar to one another. At this point there ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ were literally tons of US jungle DJ's coming up, and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ AK searching for something different, found a great ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ appreciation for the lighter side of jungle ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ championed by labels such as Timeless & Good ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Looking, which became known as Drum and Bass. It was ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Jungle without all the hardest edges that played off ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the rhythms and vibes of jazz and funk instead of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ hip-hop and dancehall reggae. AK found light in the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ soulful sounds of musical Drum and Bass, and began ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ opening or closing for people like Sasha and Digweed ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ in the main rooms of many raves and clubs across the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ US. By late î96, AK had already championed most ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ everything a DnB DJ could, and he began to focus on ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ production. After getting a call from FFRR and being ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ asked to contribute a track to an upcoming Florida ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ artist compilation called Sunshine State Of Mind, AK ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ trekked down to Miami, where he produced │You Hear ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Me Talking" in just 14 hours. This track was ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ instantly a hit for people who weren't familiar with ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ DnB, and AK quickly jumped at the opportunity to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ familiarize people to the sound. This was truly ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ where AK1200 got his popularity, and what was most ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ fun for him. It is was like starting all over again ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ for him when he was able to show people who never ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ really gave the style a chance how good the music ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ really was. To him it was much more rewarding to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ open new minds to the music than to please ones ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ already there. Slowly over the later half of the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ 90's, AK1200 again enhanced his sound and style, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ giving his fans a smooth transition to the rawest, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ most aggressive sounds of the time. By constantly ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ touring nationwide, releasing 4 very highly received ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ mix CD's on the Moonshine label, remixing many acts ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ such as The Crystal Method, Rabbit in the Moon, A ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Tribe Called Quest, Dub Pistols, Keoki, Cirrus, & ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Freestyle, AK1200 was regarded as one of a very ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ small handful of DJ's to truly conquer the scene in ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ America. His track with long time friend Danny ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Breaks, "Pornstar Style", which featured Alicia Rio, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ became an instant novelty classic, and was quickly ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ picked up by Moving Shadow, again leading the way ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ for US producer/DJ's with the established UK labels. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ More recently, AK and longtime colleagues Dieselboy ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ and Dara came to realize that they on their own had ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ become the top three dnb DJ's in the US, so what ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ would happen if they joined forces? The answer of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ course, was world domination, and the Planet of the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Drums (POTD) crew was born. In 2000, POTD planned a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ small tour with no idea or hopes really of what was ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ to comeèit was an absolute smash. Every show was ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ completely rammed, and every single face in the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ crowd had a smile. "We started out trying to prove ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ [the value of drum and bass] to the promoters and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ now we're in a position where we can raise the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ stakes for everyone," asserts AK. Since then, POTD ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ has become a major force on the scene, bringing dnb ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ out of the side rooms and onto the main floor due to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the surging popularity and undeniable skills of AK, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Diesleboy and Dara. At this time, AK also signed ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ with Lakeshore - :\run recordings, and began work on ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ his most adventurous project to date: a full length ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ studio albumè ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ The Present: Two years in the making, SHOOTTOKILL ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ marks the debut studio album from AK1200. The fact ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ that AK chose to do an album (as opposed to another ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ mix cd) is ambitious enough in itself as so many of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the dnb artist albums have fallen short of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ expectations in so many different ways: for every ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ successful album, there have been many others that ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ failed to live up to expectations in a genre ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ dominated by 12-inch single releases. │I felt that I ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ have gone practically as far as one can go as a DJ. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ I have always been interested in production, and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ thought it was the right time for an artist album- ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ it was the next logical step for me. I have so many ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ influences musically that you can't really express ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ as just a DJ, and the songs on the album reflect who ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ I am creatively without the limits of what I have to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ play as a DJ," states AK. Coming full circle, AK ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ teamed up with longtime confidant and legendary dnb ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ producer/label head Rob Playford of Moving Shadow on ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the majority of SHOOTTOKILL's production. "I have ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ known Rob for a very long time, we are very close ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ friends, so it was just a natural thing for him to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ be involved with my album. Working with him really ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ taught me a lot of things I didn't know about ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ writing music and creating sounds," comments AK. Rob ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ is considered one of the forefathers of the sound, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ releasing countless classic tunes on his Moving ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Shadow label (now running 12 years strong), and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ gaining recognition outside of the oftentimes ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ insular dnb community via his pioneering ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ collaboration with Goldie on the seminal Timeless ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ LP. Not wanting to simply make an album reflecting ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ whatever the current sound of the moment is in drum ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ and bass, AK chose to make an album that embodies ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the history of the sound - which is, in fact, his ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ own history. SHOOTTOKILL moves with ease through the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ many styles of this very diverse form of music, from ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the opening modern ragga track "Junior's Tune" ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ featuring legendary reggae vocalist Junior Reid of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Black Uhuru to the MASSVIE vocal stormer "Fake" ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ feat. Terra Deva (the album's lead single), to the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ chill dnb sounds of │Deja Nu". Hip hop has always ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ had a major influence on DnB culture, from the many ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ bootleg remixes of hip hop tunes to the style of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ dress in the scene, hip hop means as much to DnB as ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ rave culture. "Hip hop is a way of life, just like ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ being a junglist," asserts Dave. AK's passion for ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ hip hop is realized via his collaborations with ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Rawkus MC Last Emperor and A Tribe Called Quest's ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Phife Dawg. Rather than make the MC's completely ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ flip their style to match a traditional DnB ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ structure, AK and production collaborator Danny ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Breaks (a highly respected UK producer known for his ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ original drum cadences) rather chose to meet them ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ half way by producing bouncy hip hop/Dnb hybrids in ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ 'Contact" and │Take You There". Another strong ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ thread throughout the album is the sound of Florida. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ AK chose to completely embrace the regional sounds ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ of his stomping grounds on SHOOTTOKILL, evident in ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the epic, uplifting piano stabs on │Dawn Raid" and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the breakbeat collaboration │Midtempo Deluxe" with ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Orlando's DJ Icey. All in all, the many ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ collaborations helped to push AK as an artist by ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ focusing him to think outside of the traditional ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ instrumental dnb format. "Working with Phife and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Junior was musically challenging, you know trying to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ create a theme to their vocals, same with Terra Deva ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ and Last Emperor. I think all around, all the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ collaborations helped to make me a more well rounded ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ artist." All the songs on SHOOTTOKILL are anchored ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ with a sonic quality and songwriting level that, no ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ matter what the country of origin and no matter what ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ genre classification, is impressive. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ The Future: The future for AK1200 is becoming a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ reality rather quickly. Plans for his own artist ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ imprint via Lakeshore - :\run recordings are being ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ solidified now, and POTD members AK, Dieselboy, Dara ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ and newly inducted MC J-Messinian have already ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ planned on a studio collaboration before the years ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ end. The incessant touring will of course continue ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ as POTD is steadily proving that they are as much of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ a draw as any top name superstar DJ. As drum and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ bass and electronic music as a whole both expands ░██▌▄▀
