| | Jaz Klash is a collaboration between | |
| | Bristol's critically- lauded DJ- duo More | |
| | Rockers (who are, in better detail, Peter D. | |
| | and Rob Smith) and Los Angeles' The Angel. | |
| | Formerly released in the UK on the instant- | |
| | cred label Cup of Tea, Jaz Klash's Thru The | |
| | Haze is a frosted slurpee of intellegent | |
| | jungle and jazzy drum-n-bass. Of course, its | |
| | smoky- lounge atmospherics would probably be | |
| | better received as background music for a | |
| | joint- smoking session than on the dance | |
| | floor. | |
| | | |
| | If you've been keeping score, you'll know | |
| | that it isn't terribly difficult to come | |
| | across good jazzy drum-n-bass these days. But | |
| | occasionally, you find a record that really | |
| | stands out. Now, I'm not saying that Thru The | |
| | Haze is up there with Amon Tobin's Bricolage, | |
| | but it's damn close. | |
| | | |
| | There are moments on Thru The Haze that you | |
| | may think you've heard before-- the | |
| | delicious, deadly funk of "Traffic," the | |
| | Quincy Jones stylings of "Intrigue (Down For | |
| | Whatever)," and the Pharoah Sanders- esque | |
| | jazz flute on "'67"-- but you haven't; they | |
| | simply remind you of great moments in musical | |
| | history. That Thru The Haze will ever be | |
| | considered a benchmark of its genre seems | |
| | unlikely, but not because it isn't good | |
| | enough-- quite the contrary, actually. It'll | |
| | be because too many were ignorant of its | |
| | existence. | |
