The second time I listened to this e.p., it took me about half a
minute into "Vintage" to realize that the needle was skipping --
badly. My thoughts were something akin to "Boy, they must have
really ripped up the needle on that one." But that's part of the
point of the people on the record, right? Eddie Def, Extrakd,
Brain, Disk, and Buckethead all manage to push forth their craft,
whether with the guitar, drum, or turntable to new, weird
directions, bending sound to their own devious ends.
This music will reach around from nether regions and smack you
around, and make you like it. Just as you're drifting along in a
sort of noise dirge groove session, Disk will manhandle the wax
into the mix and set the whole thing flying off into further
reaches. It doesn't let you settle into a nice rhythm, like that
dance record flipped on the '45; better yet, it doesn't disrupt the
harmony with forced arrhythmic gestures, but rather coalesces a
fairly good sized universe of sounds and styles into a new whole.
Plenty of the performers on the album are infamous in their own
right, but they've played together before, and know how to blend
everyone's aural tics into the mix. It's also surprisingly funky
for an "experimental" album; Dark Side Whiplash features some
guitar funk like something out of a dusted out acid tripping
Morricone soundtrack, and when you pile it on with the rest of the
procession, it's a nice jambalaya of enlivening noise. Even the
stuff you've heard before, like the classic "So damn tough!" sample
scratched over in so many hip-hop jams, manages to get tweaked in
new ways, and perhaps the easiest sample of the bunch, Peter Graves
asking "Have you ever seen a grown man naked?", fits in nicely. A
chunky stew indeed.
