| About Mantis: |

| Martin Iveson aka Atjazz runs the label Mantis Recordings along |
| with his mate Andy McCandless. Iveson released his first EP |
| "Story" on Mantis in 1996 before he began to record for |
| Nottingham based label DiY Discs. After AtjazzÆs successful work |
| with DIY, partners Iveson and McCandless resurrected Mantis |
| Recordings in 1998 for AtjazzÆs musical output and that of their |
| friends. The first track to be released in two years was AtjazzÆs |
| ôFifth Quarterö. Since then he produced and remixed for a |
| multitude of labels around the globe gaining huge respect along |
| the way. |

| Atjazz: |
| |
| Martin Iveson moved from the North-East of England to the |
| Midlands City of Derby in 1991 to take a position as in-house |
| musician for the then fledgling video games company Core Design. |
| Martin had cut his musical teeth while experimenting with sounds |
| on his small keyboard and home computer. His new job meant that |
| he could hone his skills by being in a studio on a day-to-day |
| basis. Core Design went on to produce the hugely successful Tomb |
| Raider series of games to which Martin has contributed most of |
| the music and sound effects. Not content with sound tracking one |
| of the world's biggest computer games; Martin's passion for music |
| saw him set up his own studio, from which he could flex his |
| musical capabilities without the limitations of a games console. |
| |
| Martin met Andy Mac, then manager of an independent record shop |
| in Derby and they became great friends. Their zeal for good music |
| led them to set up their own label, Mantis Recordings. Martin |
| took on the artist name of æAtjazz', and in 1996 released the |
| first Atjazz single æStory'. |
| |
| The positive reactions to Story inspired Martin to write his |
| debut album æThat Something'. Both Martin's and Andy Mac's |
| day-jobs meant they couldn't commit the time to give the album |
| the release it deserved on Mantis, so when fellow East |
| Midlander's DiY offered to put it out on their Diversions label, |
| They jumped at the chance. The album was a great success and went |
| on to be licensed in Italy by Irma Records and Japan by Sony. |
| |
| Mantis Recordings and Atjazz sprung back into action with a |
| string of releases based around a framework of local artists, and |
| the second Atjazz album æLabfunk' was released on Mantis in 2001. |
| The experience Martin gained from the writing and recording of |
| this second album, helped cement him as an in demand producer and |
| remixer. Martin has released tracks on the highly respected |
| Compost label, and released æLabresults', a remix album of |
| æLabfunk', which kept the sound moving forward with some fresh |
| tracks. He also produced the album æThat Day' for Magic Number, |
| which was released on Stereo Deluxe. His vast studio knowledge |
| isn't limited to just glimmering techno soul either; he's turned |
| his hand to twiddling the knobs for one of the late great John |
| Peel's favourite guitar bands Twinkie. All this time Martin |
| continues to work on the music and sound effects for world-class |
| computer and console games, most notably the Tomb Raider series. |
| For the sixth variation of that story æAngel Of Darkness', Martin |
| composed the music alongside Peter Connelly. With arrangement and |
| scoring by Martin's main Labfunkateer Pete Wraight, the |
| soundtrack was then performed and recorded with The London |
| Symphony Orchestra at the legendary Abbey Road studios. |
| |
| Martin moves ever onward with the Atjazz sound, adding to the |
| diversity of production and writing styles through remixes, new |
| musical creations and via his stunning DJ sets, which for those |
| listening (and dancing) may help piece together his many |
| influences. A new Atjazz album is now well underway in the |
| studio, and will see collaborations with such superb artists as |
| Charles Webster, Clara Hill, Charlie Dark, Ernesto & The |
| Phuturistix. The album will touch down in 2005, so expect to be |
| hearing and seeing a lot more of Atjazz. |

| Brooks: |
| |
| Andrew Brooks was born in the musically vibrant year of 1979. A |
| childhood of Top of the Pops, and rummaging through his Dads, as |
| Brooks puts it, ôreally gayö record collection both helped shape |
| his musical future. He'd later plunder that collection for his |
| early musical experiments, sampling Barbara Streisand and placing |
| her within his own world of strange beats. You wouldn't find |
| Brooks listening with his school friends to Grunge compilations. |
| Instead it was the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Grace Jones and all |
| points between Eno and E-Dancer that shaped his musical mind. As |
| a teenager he met the Nottingham DiY collective through the |
| Midlands free party scene. Each summer weekend he fed his parents |
| that classic lie of going to stay at a friends house and would |
| get a lift with his older brother to wherever the party was, |
| staying one step ahead of the boys in blue. Brooks gained much |
| more from these parties than dirty sneakers and a comedown |
| however. Andrew was brimming with musical ideas, which were to |
| soon find an outlet. |

| As a native of Derby, Brooks was destined to meet the fellow |
| residents and similarly musically oriented minds of Atjazz and |
| Andy Mac, the owners of Mantis Recordings. Seeing his enthusiasm |
| and talent, Atjazz gave Brooks access to his studio, along with |
| some helpful advice, and at the tender age of 16 Brooks released |
| his first track æElectric Dance Machine' on the DiY Discs album |
| 2922 Days. Inevitably singles for Mantis followed, and seeing the |
| ever-growing teen talent, they asked him for an album. They knew |
| they could expect something different, but the resulting LP was |
| beyond anything they could have hoped for. æYou, Me & Us' was |
| undoubtedly an ambitious debut. |

| Within weeks of the record's release he was fending off the remix |
| offers, flying to the seedier corners of Northern Europe in |
| honour of the many turntable requests and beginning to shape the |
| quantum leap in imagination that would form the follow-up album, |
| Red Tape. |
| |
| Red Tape was a personal journey for Brooks. A new set of |
| influences took hold over Andrew's obsessive personality. The |
| Weimar cabaret effect; Lord Byron's dirty escapades in a villa |
| with narcotics; the dark-room, skinhead sex of modern Berlin's |
| rapturous night-time culture; Nazi suppression of the arts and |
| the sound of concentration camp walls; the howling winds of |
| graveyards in Edinburgh at 3am; the music of industrial |
| machinery. A stint of living in the culturally vibrant city of |
| Manchester, followed by a move back to the not so cosmopolitan |
| surroundings of Derby also shaped the songs within. |

| Angry' Andrew Brooks has written an incredibly bold album in Red |
| Tape. It's difficult to define it's sound, as there's not really |
| anything it could directly be compared to. Intimidating yet |
| danceable, it's a remarkable album. Licensed to Matthew Herbert's |
| Soundslike imprint, it certainly sits comfortably in their |
| first-class catalogue of releases. |
