█ Astounding. Another release of Vinterriket has hit █
█ the streets and again some sort of recycling has █
█ taken place. Imagine a combination of Nebelkorona █
█ and the 'Lichtschleier' album of Vinterriket and █
█ you get a pretty good impression on how Firntann █
█ sounds. Unlike the aforementioned release, the █
█ here offered art presents not the kind of █
█ minimalism which made Lichtschleier so hard to █
█ endure. As keyboards and drums (!) (or better said █
█ a drum-computer) have been added to the droning █
█ textures in the background, it is better to listen █
█ to it and to enjoy the qualities of Vinterriket. █
█ Would it not be for... yes, would it not be for █
█ the new amount of cheesiness that has been brought █
█ into the compositions. █
█ As already mentioned, it is possible to listen to █
█ drums on this EP, but their impact on the music is █
█ not entirely positive. This has to do with two █
█ factors: it is a drum-computer and a sound that █
█ reminds the listener on gothic bands and the like. █
█ As a matter of fact that it is a drum computer the █
█ programming is very minimalist and repetitive; not █
█ to mention that the mix in the background as well █
█ as the style in which they are the æplayedÆ sound █
█ wake the suspicion that they should under no █
█ circumstance disturb the 'dark' atmosphere, but █
█ try to enrich the music with something... whatever █
█ this might be. A rhythm? Some kind of dynamic? █
█ Some real drums with a natural sound and with some █
█ slight reverb, not to mention better motives, █
█ would certainly enrich the music in one or another █
█ way, but currently the share of this æinstrumentÆ █
█ can certainly be neglected. Why? Listen to the █
█ music and skip around a bit... the drums are █
█ disturbing, they do not fit into the compositions █
█ entirely. █
█ An ambivalent aspect of the Firntann EP are also █
█ the vocals; yes, unbelievable but true. Nothing █
█ more than a whispering is offered and of the █
█ lyrics hardly anything can be understood. It is a █
█ little bit strange to listen to them, because it █
█ is hard to figure out what they are singing about █
█ and also due to the monotonous style in which they █
█ are presented. The dark ambient parts are very █
█ alike those on Lichtschleier, but the impact of █
█ the field recordings on the music has been █
█ reduced. █
█ This release is certainly more interesting than █
█ the quite boring 'Lichtschleier' release, but █
█ still the music lacks of quality and fascinating █
█ elements. Dark Ambient should create an intense █
█ atmosphere and Vinterriket is simply not able to █
█ do so. Of the nice field recordings hardly █
█ anything can be perceived on this release and even █
█ though new elements had been added to the music, █
█ they are not able to please the listener entirely. █
█ A neat EP ... nothing more. █
