The Herbie Nichols Project is a working, performing,
researching entity, dedicated to rediscovering and developing
the work of the innovative but under-recognized
composer/pianist Herbie Nichols and, in doing so, bringing his
music to a wider audience. Premiered by the Jazz Composers
Collective in 1994, the Project is co-led by pianist Frank
Kimbrough and bassist Ben Allison.
Herbie Nichols was born in New York City on January 3, 1919. A
contemporary of Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell, Nichols was a
brilliant composer and pianist who died in 1963 at the early
age of 44 from leukemia.
Nichols' musical legacy is rich in influences. The feel of New
Orleans Dixieland, the folk melodies of his parents? native
West Indies, the rhythmic excitement of bebop, and the
harmonies of Bartok, are all woven skillfully through his
works. Compositionally unique, his music is timeless in its
appeal.
Nichols recorded only six sessions as a leader, all in the
trio format. These sessions resulted in four releases, three
for Blue Note Records and one for the Bethlehem label. His
contemporaries recount that Nichols often talked about his
desire to score and record his work for horns. Unfortunately,
he never got the chance to so. He is rumored to have written
as many as 170 compositions, but only about forty were
recorded before his death. Many others were thought to be lost
forever (destroyed by a flood in the basement of his father?s
apartment where they were stored, along with his poetry and
other writings), until 1995 when the Jazz Composers Collective
uncovered 30 previously unrecorded works at the Library of
Congress. The Collective has since added 27 compositions to
its catalog bringing the total number of known works to 96.
The Herbie Nichols Project has recorded two CDs for the
Italy-based Soul Note label (Love Is Proximity and Dr.
Cyclops' Dream), both of which feature several previously
unrecorded works by Nichols and have received widespread
critical acclaim. The group has completed many international
and national tours, and has appeared in live and taped
interviews and performances on radio stations worldwide.
