     Liner notes:

In preparing these notes I spent a long rainy Saturday with my
collection of Griffin on vinyl and CD, listening to Riverside
albums from the fifties, reading liner notes by Orren Keepnews
and had a good time. Most interesting to read was the interview
which late drummer Arthur Taylor conducted with Johnny for his
book "Notes & Tones" which should be first priority if you want
to get an understanding of the music and their makers. Which
really got me into Griffin was his CD "The Cat" in 1991 which I
kept playing over and over again. Truely one of the very few
essential jazz recordings of the nineties which covers all
bases: great tunes, interesting arrangements, a tight band with
excellent musicians and unbelievalble soulful and thoughtout
     improvisations by Griff.

Around that time I called Johnny at his french castle, to find
out about his willingness to participate as a guest in a
project which for various reasons never got realised. What
struck me from this first encounter on phone is his humour. And
I guess to become 70 plus years in this business of music and
jazz you need quite some of it. Over the years we kept in touch
and did certain projects together but never for the record.
After he finally was no longer on an exclusive recording
contract with anybody we discussed the idea of the album you
are listening to now. As it turns out now this which was to
become Johnny's first duet recording became out of conflicting
schedules chronologically his second one. But who cares?

Johnny and Horace Parlan have worked in the early sixties
together in New York before Johnny became a European by choice
and when Horace made that decision for himself years later they
reunited on many occasions, usually in a quartet format.

Here you have two master musicians of an ara which will be gone
once all the survivors will have finished their last journies
and moved on to another place.

Often the status of individual musicians of the modern tenor
saxophone has been discussed and for various reasons masters
like Johnny never got the recognition by the public and the
critics they deserve. You might have your own special tenor
favorite but the history of the instrument would have been
     another one without Griff.

Needless to say we all had a great time recording the music for
this CD and hope you'll enjoy it too.
