A portrait of the author as a fish ûand the music as his
aquarium: Dietmar Dath reads. äIm Erwachten Gartenô (äIn The
Awoken Gardenô), a hitherto unpublished ôalternate versionö (a
ôlooking glass textö) to his polyphonic novel äDie Abschaffung
der Artenô (äThe Abolition Of The Speciesô). In it, animals
explain the meaning of love, war and history to human beings.
äIm Erwachten Gartenô is a key to a secret original text which
lies beneath the published novel. The animated, unpredictable
and chameleon like environment accompanying this text comes as
a present from the musicians of the Kammerflimmer Kollektief.
Text becomes music, music becomes legible. There are two
voices: That of the text and the other one, which whispers,
susurrates, cooes, like a whitsun flamlet. And it is precisely
this voice, which relates the substance of the text. Such
evening beauty, so wraped up in reverb. Here we hear that the
world has a drum kit where human beings have a heart. äThey
pelt the text with music and they shell the music with text so
that written text suddenly receives an echo. Likewise, tonal
matter seems to be organized in lines; the sounds receive a
layout for the ear, a narrative nature and a lyrical texture.ô
The Kammerflimmer Kollektief plays music, which should not be
written down, for it would scorch the paper. The project,
whose music meanders between precision and freedom, has been
founded in 1996 by Thomas Weber. Up to now, the Kollektief has
released six albums in all sorts of line ups. Live
performances all over the world are realized as a trio (with
Heike Aumⁿller and Johannes Frisch). A new mind-altering
collection of songs by the name of äWildlingô is just being
prepared and will be released soon.
Dietmar Dath is a writer and translator residing in Freiburg
and Frankfurt am Main. He has been chief editor of the
renowned german music magazine Spex as well as editor with the
daily newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. His novels,
non-fiction books and newspaper articles are systematically
subverting, overflying, galloping through and crisscrossing
the boundaries of genres and imagination.
