░█▒ This new single from London-based neo-folk / dark pop band ▒█░
░█▒ Naevus is an appetiser for the bandÆs new album, Relatively ▒█░
░█▒ Close To The Sea, which is also being released on Albin JuliusÆ ▒█░
░█▒ Hau Ruck! Label. ▒█░
░█▒ ▒█░
░█▒ The A-side is æGo GrowÆ, in a seven-minute version edited down ▒█░
░█▒ from the 18-minute epic which features on the album. Lloyd James ▒█░
░█▒ and Joanne Owens are accompanied by drummer John Murphy and ▒█░
░█▒ guest cellist Joanna Quail of SonVer. æGo GrowÆ builds slowly, ▒█░
░█▒ with an instrumental intro of strummed acoustic guitar laid over ▒█░
░█▒ heavy, tumbling tom-tom drums. The dreamy, drifting, almost ▒█░
░█▒ shoegazer, atmosphere of the track resolves into a typically ▒█░
░█▒ uneasy dark pop song. Lloyd JamesÆ witty, oblique lyrics range ▒█░
░█▒ between eels, chewing gum and buildings on fire, all delivered ▒█░
░█▒ in a clear, laconic tone. Given that this is an abridged version ▒█░
░█▒ of a much longer song, the edits are imperceptible û I donÆt ▒█░
░█▒ think youÆd know this was a shortened song without being told. ▒█░
░█▒ The album Relatively Close To The Sea, and the longer version of ▒█░
░█▒ æGo GrowÆ, are reviewed elsewhere on Judas Kiss, but I must ▒█░
░█▒ admit I prefer this shorter version, which retains all the ▒█░
░█▒ lyrics and more rigidly structured sections of the longer ▒█░
░█▒ version whilst dispensing with the prog-rock longeurs, with ▒█░
░█▒ enough time left in hand for a lilting accordion interlude in ▒█░
░█▒ the middle. Lloyd James also apparently plays a trombone on ▒█░
░█▒ here, but itÆs not readily discernible to me. ▒█░
░█▒ ▒█░
░█▒ The B-side contains two tracks, both cover versions, and both ▒█░
░█▒ exclusive to this single. The first is 'Now That I've Paid For ▒█░
░█▒ You', written by Greg Ferrari of Womb. (Greg is an erstwhile ▒█░
░█▒ member of Naevus, and Lloyd and Joanne of Naevus also belong to ▒█░
░█▒ Womb.) The lyrics seem to describe a sordid, Velvet ▒█░
░█▒ Underground-esque scenario of waiting for the arrival of a ▒█░
░█▒ prostitute and wondering what to do with her. It doesnÆt have a ▒█░
░█▒ happy ending, but I wonÆt spoil it for you. ▒█░
░█▒ ▒█░
░█▒ The second track on side B is 'Stephanie, I Forgive You', an ▒█░
░█▒ alcohol- saturated ballad of lost love written by David E. ▒█░
░█▒ Williams and originally released on 2005Æs Pseudo Erotica And ▒█░
░█▒ Beyond album. Naevus, of course, have plenty of previous with ▒█░
░█▒ regard to David E. Williams, having contributed to the tribute ▒█░
░█▒ album The Appeal Of Discarded Orthodoxy, as well as including a ▒█░
░█▒ version of æLess Than QueerÆ on the Document Three split release ▒█░
░█▒ with Knifeladder. David E. Williams has also guested on several ▒█░
░█▒ Naevus releases. 'Stephanie, I Forgive You' opens with a minimal ▒█░
░█▒ pairing of strummed acoustic guitar and accordion before the ▒█░
░█▒ introduction of drums, piano and a powerfully thrumming bassline ▒█░
░█▒ more closely approximates David E. WilliamsÆ own typically ▒█░
░█▒ grandiose productions. Counter-intuitively, given that the ▒█░
░█▒ original version of the song had a chamber-music arrangement of ▒█░
░█▒ violin, viola and cello, Joanne QuailÆs cello is absent from ▒█░
░█▒ this song. ▒█░
░█▒ ▒█░
░█▒ Go Grow comes in a glossy card sleeve with insert, and itÆs ▒█░
░█▒ pressed on one of those ultra-fat black slabs of Hau Ruck! ▒█░

░█▒ where there is an entertainingly minimal video of æGo GrowÆ, ▒█░
░█▒ with a tentacle which wriggles and changes colour ever so ▒█░
