Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Rhode Island, July 2, 1965.
The original "New Thing At Newport" showcased the sets of Archie Shepp's
quartet on the afternoon of July 2, 1965 and the John Coltrane quartet
on the same evening. Missing from the original album was Shepp's
"Gingerbread, Ginbread Boy" which ultimately appeared on his album
"On This Night". Coltrane's version of "My Favourite Things", which
was rather aggressive and revealed some of the tension in this classic
group which would disintegrate some five months later, was not issued
until the late 70's. Shepp, who had already established himself with
a four horn-bass-drums configuration, held this magnificent quartet
with Bobby Hutcherson together only long enough to record the exquisite
studio album "On This Night" a month after Newport. - Michael Cuscuna
