██▌▄▀█ Is Phil K dance musicÆs answer to Bob the Builder? ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ôIÆve just been building BBQÆs, cleaning the carpet ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ and trying to be a bit normal,ö he reminisces of his ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ exploits over the last couple of weeks. ôItÆs good ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ fun not worrying about music or even logging on to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the internet. I know IÆve got a big year ahead of me ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ and that if I donÆt take at least a small break now ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ I wonÆt get a chance to have any breaks during the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ year. YouÆve always got that fear of burning out and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ getting sick of what youÆre doing which IÆm ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ conscience of.ö ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ And if 2003 is any bigger than 2002, Phil K has a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ rather large year ahead of him. It comes off the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ back of his hugely successful Balance 004 double mix ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ CD and Phil K vs Nubreed national tour, both of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ which have helped to place him as one of the worlds ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ leading exponents of progressive breaks. While ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ writing up this interview I did some research on ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Phil K and found that not only is he becoming a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ household name in the Australian dance music ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ community but was surprised to see how well known he ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ is internationally. I did a quick search on a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ popular music file-swapping site, Soulseek, and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ discovered that almost all the serious breakbeat ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ fans worldwide had mp3Æs of Phil KÆs tracks ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ downloaded and his new mix CD is causing a buzz ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ across dance music forums all over the world. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ôThe focus of the new CD was more on a sound,ö he ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ says comparing it to his previous CD æSound not ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ SceneÆ. ôI didnÆt want to sound like Pilgrem or ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Tayo. So my choice of records was based around ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ playing some of the tracks I found exciting and to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ come up with a nice theme and the musicality that ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ IÆm finding lacking in a lot of the music. I wanted ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ to find records that have something special about ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ them, with a really good musical base and idea. That ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ doesnÆt mean there arenÆt minimal sounding records ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ in there. Minimal records are just as important as a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ big record. But the fact is that currently there are ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ too many minimal records and not enough full, themed ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ pieces of music. So youÆll find a track there by DJ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Abstract that doesnÆt really do much. But I felt ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ that at that point of the CD thatÆs what I needed so ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ that by the time the next serious piece of music ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ came along it could be appreciated. ItÆs like doing ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ a painting with lots of colour. If youÆve got loads ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ of colours on one canvas thereÆs no definition. But ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ if you introduce the minimalism to the music itÆs ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ like separating the colours to give them their own ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ identity and contrast. I think I got the balance ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ right and the reviews everywhere have been amazing. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Part of the reason is that it is different to the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ style of breaks coming out of the UK at the moment. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ItÆs an Australian sound that has flavour to it.ö ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ The Australian flavour, of which Phil K talks, seems ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ to have skipped some states. ôIf you go to Sydney, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the breaks capital of Australia, every DJ plays the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ same records from the same UK labels, pitched up to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ +6 % and basing itself around cheesy funky rifts and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ James Brown samples,ö he says with a chuckle. ôThat ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ sounds has a lifespan and itÆs boring. Every DJ I ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ spoke to on my last visit there, when I asked what ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ they played they all said funky house and breaks. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Every house DJ is now a breaks DJ playing Finker ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ LickinÆ records and the other obvious labels. Last ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ time I was in Adelaide I was speaking to Adam ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Freeland and I asked him whatÆs new and he replied ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ôthere really aint much, mate.ö And there isnÆt a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ great deal of exciting music around, But that ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ doesnÆt mean it isnÆt there. You just have to search ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ for itö ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ The time of which Phil K speaks was last September ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ for the Stardust Festival. ôStardust was really ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ fantastic,ö he enthuses. ôI had to play before ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Freeland so was playing a warmup set. And ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ surprisingly the crowd just kept building. Just the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ fact that Adam had a full room for the whole time ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ was promising for breaks in Adelaide. When I came ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ with Nubreed there werenÆt that many people there ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ but the people who were there were loving it and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ totally got into it. I remember the æSound Not ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ SceneÆ album I did getting reviewed in Adelaide a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ few years back. It was reviewed as a chillout comp, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ not dancefloor material. And at the time of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ recording the album, all of the tracks on it were my ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ biggest dancefloor records for the 3 years previous ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ to it being released. The reviewer missed the whole ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ point of the mix. So things have definitely changed ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ in Adelaideö ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Phil K begins 2003 in Adelaide again as part of a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ little event known as The Big Day Out. ôThis is my ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ first time nationally with the BDO,ö he informs me ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ excitedly. ôThe first year they put me on in the Hot ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ House room at 12:30pm just as the gates opened. I ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ played my heart out the best that I could and maybe ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ someone heard it as the next year they put me in the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Boiler Room. It was like I was in a one hour boxing ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ match throwing my biggest punches and they all ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ connected. Again, the powers that be must have seen ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ that as they rang me up asking if I wanted to do the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ whole tour. If I can capture what IÆve done at the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ last two BDOÆs I think it will be a really ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ successful tour. At those kind of crossover shows ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ IÆve found that indy kids are more inclined to lose ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ it to a breakbeat set than to house. And the style ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ of house music that I like to play is not a big room ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ thing as compared to Dave Clarke who played at last ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ years BDO. But having said all that IÆll see how it ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ goes on the day and IÆm not going to rule out ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ playing 4/4 records. Going back to the boxing match ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ analogy, youÆve got to make sure all your punches ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ connect and your first punch in particular connects ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ hard. If that first point of impact doesnÆt happen ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ youÆre fighting an uphill battle for the rest of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ your set. So youÆve got to get people excited from ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the first moment.ö ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ While The Big Day Out is a huge opportunity, Phil K ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ isnÆt limiting his sights to Australia this year ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ with an ever increasing international fanbase ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ beckoning and production no longer an issue. ôIÆve ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ planned my year and I know where IÆm heading,ö he ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ explains. ôLast year I had to be at home to produce. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Since then I bought myself a laptop. Now I may not ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ do a tour of America and by the time I get back have ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ two records finished in my laptop. But just the fact ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ that if I feel compelled to write a melody or get an ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ idea I can do it on the spot and save it and come ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ back to it later makes me happy. So when I get there ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ I can walk into someoneÆs studio with my computer ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ and work on a track IÆve already started. Technology ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ has helped me in that area and IÆm free from the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ restrains of being stuck in a room and a geographic ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ location.ö ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Perhaps the laptop will come in useful sooner rather ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ than later as a Phil K vs Nubreed international tour ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ is inevitable after they blew the roof off Australia ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ last year and had their live show broadcast through ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ the UK. ôHopefully this year we can take the Phil K ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ vs Nubreed show out of Australia,ö he says in the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ low key manner youÆd expect from him. ôWeÆve had a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ lot of interest from America and Asia. Europe is ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ probably coming up but America is our focus. In ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Europe electronic music has been so big for the last ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ decade that we feel that while weÆve got something ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ to offer, America and Asia is where the true ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ potential lies. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Enjoy this mix cd from DJ Magazine in June! ░██▌▄▀
