Clarence Bucaro shares a certain stylistic similarity to John Mayer and Jack
Johnson in that he easily straddles that sometimes-treacherous line between pop
and rootsy tradition. Still, one would hardly guess that outright; the cover of
one of his earlier albums showed a fresh-faced kid who could otherwise stake a
claim to being a teen idol, while the photo that graces this new release bodes
the possibility of an otherwise idyllic rumination. In truth, æTil Spring is a
spirited nod to pure Southern soul, infused with classic keyboards, riveting
guitar riffs and a vocal that emotes with the ageless grace of a distinguished
veteran.
In songs such as "Renew My Faith In You." "On the Map," "Tale My Love" and
"Standing On Old Grounds," Bucaro conveys a timeless perspective from a newly
minted point of view, one that recalls the reverent feel of an earlier
generation, when names like Clapton, Winwood and Allman plied their craft and
set the standard. That timeless touch also suggests a down-home brew, stirred
from the traditions of Stax and Muscle Shoals and successfully served up for the
current millennium. And if beautiful ballads like "'Til a Spring Wind Blows
Again" or a spunky aside along the lines of "Back in the World" hint at a try
for the charts, then so be it. Bucaro's nothing if not deserving.
