| | As the label that first gave a platform to | |
| | talents like Roni Size and Marky, a V release | |
| | demands respect and rarely disapoints. The | |
| | pressure must have really been on Utah Jazz | |
| | then as he began work on his debut album for | |
| | V offshoot, Liquid V. After his 2006 mash-up | |
| | reworking of Roni Size's V classics "It's A | |
| | Jazz Thing" and "All The Crew Big Up" became | |
| | one of the most battered plates of the year, | |
| | Utah Jazz was an obvious choice to carry the | |
| | original spirit of V recordings forward in | |
| | fresh directions and became only the second | |
| | artist to release an album through the | |
| | legendary imprint. Nodding to his | |
| | predecessors the LP is entitled "It's A Jazz | |
| | Thing" but, in fact, this album is a whole | |
| | lot more than that. Funk, soul, reggae, hip | |
| | hop, and good old jungle all combine through | |
| | Utah Jazz's sample-centric approach to | |
| | production. The tracks burst with influence | |
| | and, courtesy of the myriad, ubiquitous | |
| | samples, have a real warmth and natural | |
| | groove. This is nowhere better illustrated | |
| | than on "Mesmerize", a roller that grooves | |
| | away over classic breaks while haunting | |
| | pianos and trembling strings bring the | |
| | musicality. "The Message" is all hypnotic | |
| | Good Looking vibes while "Cloud Nine" takes | |
| | things seriously deep with its loose breaks | |
| | punctuating a pounding bassline, drifter over | |
| | by crackling piano samples. "Riddim Track" is | |
| | pure reggae and bass while "Acoustic Jam" | |
| | closes this outstanding debut in style. | |
