too - has something kind to say about the 70s German outfit.
Comprised of guitarist Michael Rother and drummer Klaus
Dinger,
Neu!'s brain-melting guitar loops and driving motorik beat
ushered in a new age of rhythmic psychedelia, influencing
everyone from Eno and Bowie to Ricardo Villalobos and Sonic
Youth.
May 11th sees the release of a compilation of songs loosely
inspired by Neu!, courtesy of the curiously named Feraltone
label. Not new songs, you understand, but ones already in
existence. As such, you'll recognize a fair few of 'em: LCD
Soundsystem's 'Watch The Tapes', Holy Fuck's 'Super Inuit' and
Fujiya & Miyagi's 'Electro Karaoke' are all pretty famous
examples of Neu!-derived groove-rock. Other notable efforts
include (Sonic Youth side-project) Ciccone Youth's 'Two Cool
Rock Chicks Listening to Neu!', Primal Scream's 'Shoot Speed /
Kill Light' and Cornelius's 'Wataridori'; the inclusion of
tracks by Foals and School of Seven Bells prove that the
young'ns are up to speed too. And yes, Oasis show up with 'I
Can See It Now' (one of their less dreadful efforts from
recent years). The main draw for Neu! fans will be 'Sketch
1_08', a previously unreleased track by La Dusseldorf, the
band Dinger formed after leaving Neu!; Rother appears also
with his own solo tribute, 'Neutronics 98 (A Tribute to Conny
Plank)'.
