Release Notes:
It was a cruel joke all right: trapping a lonesome drifter in
an endless chasm of bricks and people. No horizon. No sunsets.
No escape. 'New York City is an island. Let's leave it at
that,' says James Apollo about his new hometown. 'I couldn't
handle it at first...÷ he says with a hint of a smile, '...and
I can't handle it now.' But for as much as he tried to escape
the claustrophobic crush, New York did much to inspire the
woeful melodies and desperate mantras of this EP. The city
left Apollo with a new set of scars: a fast motorcycle on a
rain-soaked street broke his legs; a raven-haired temptress
broke his heart. The pain and anger seep through every
anguished stanza of the Western-laced 'It's Cruel', where
James's crushed-velvet croon cries from a darkened land where
no one goes by choice. The rumbles of a baritone sax trace
'Morphine & Wine', a melancholy ode to broken nights on a
hospital bed. But amid the anguish and the whiskey beats, a
glimmer of tenderness: the touching duet ⌠Sleepyeye÷. The cast
of 'Angels' reads like a who's who of roustabout musicians.
Players for the likes of Lou Reed and R.L. Burnside stopped by
to round out the sound of Apollo's solid troupe of rum-soaked
highwaymen, lending true grit to these forlorn tales. The
canyon streets of New York City may have hatched these songs,
but this is Western music. These songs are for sunsets. Those
streetlamps are stars. They lead right out of town.
