Release Notes:
Affectionately described by Laura Veirs as her "4:00AM songs," Two Beers Veirs
was conceived after longtime musical inspiration from the artists she's covered
and spontaneous motivation to pay tribute. Laura explains: "I had been talking
with Tucker (her producer) about recording some of my favorite songs for a tour
EP and one night at midnight he said, "Well, let's just go and do it!" We headed
downstairs and came up four hours later with an EP of songs that are dear to
me.ö The track listing includes older songs from Elizabeth Cotten (ôFreight
Trainö), Mississippi John Hurt (ôSpike Drivers Bluesö), and Clarence Ashley
(ôThe Coo Cooö). These have been longstanding favorites of LauraÆs:
ôElizabeth Cotten has been an inspiration over the years. Watching her play
upside down and backwards always blows my mind. æThe Coo CooÆ has been done many
different ways over the years; I also like to play this one fast on the banjo.ö
"Spike Driver's Blues" has been performed live by Laura hundreds of times and
has even influenced one of her original songs, "John Henry Livesö from her 2001
release, The Triumphs & Travails of Orphan Mae.
"Wildwood Flower,ö made popular by the Carter Family, has a timeless melody and
has a nostalgic personal tie to Laura. ôIt is a joy to play, especially since I
had the opportunity last year to hang out in June Carter and Johnny Cash's cabin
in Henderson, TN; I stared at a stained-glass portrait of Mother Maybelle and
marveled at the gift of music her family has given us.ö Laura also covers a
modern song with traditional undertone, "Wasps of Rain," by Seattle native Mike
Dumovich. Two Beers Veirs, which was only previously available on tour and
online since summer of 2008, is now available at retail for the first-time
exclusively via CIMS/Junketboy.
