Already descibed as "the best band to emerge from Rugby since
Spiritualized", the 7.20s have been promoting their debut EP
since the beginning of the year and have received some great
feedback. Let us add to that.
A generous five tracks demonstrate the band's range and skill
kicking off with apparent French fancy 'J'Adore L'Amour',
replete with gruff yet theatrical cries of 'Oooh la la' and a
deep groove reminiscent of Friendly Fires, The Music and, for
those of you of a certain vintage, New Fast Automatic
Daffodils. Beautiful string arrangements then propel 'Blue
Sunshine' from a Doves-alike piano ballad to a considerably
more grandiose realm before 'Flying Kites' feasts on the
low-slung bass and gliding synths of New Order while Ed
Wright's schizophrenic vocal flits from Barney Sumner to Jon
McClure.
The maudlin 'Tears' is, unfortunately, an unnecessarily
depressing diversion and is the one, if any, you'll find
yourself skipping. It paints a drab side to the band that
they simply don't appear to have, especially not on final
track 'Keep on Holding On' which is, conversely, filled with
optimism, supported brilliantly by an almost 'Joshua Tree'-era
U2 backing. The fact The 7.20s remain unsigned is a mystery -
don't record companies want sure things any more?
