After Jimmy Smith's early success in 1956, the Hammond B-3
organ exploded on the jazz scene throughout the late fifties
and in every major Midwestern and Eastern city in America. Los
Angeles didn't get into to the game until 1961 when Les McCann
brought Richard "Groove" Holmes to the attention of Pacific
Jazz's Richard Bock.
Groove earned his nickname with a powerful, bluesy pocket and
an exciting style. With the exception of a few years at
Prestige, Holmes spent the sixties at Pacific Jazz recording
with tneor saxophone greats Gene Ammons and Ben Webster, in
trios that included the great Joe Pass and with big band
accompaniment by Gerald Wilson among others.
Eleven of his greatest performances for the label, several
never before available on CD, are gathered on this collection,
remastered in 24-bit from the original master tapes. Featuring
Gene Ammons, Leroy Henderson, Ben Webster, Harold Land, Teddy
Edwards, Mel Lewis, Les McCann, Joe Pass, Ernie Watts and
others.
