-Release Notes:
Edmund Leonard Thigpen was born on December 28, 1930 in Chicago. When he was
old enough to travel, he would visit his father, drummer Ben Thigpen, who was
based in Kansas City with the swing band of Andy Kirk and His Clouds of Joy
(and whose drum chair Ben held for seventeen years). As a child, Ed moved with
his mother to Los Angeles and lived there until he was 19, when his father
called for him to join him in St. Louis, where he was now based. Ed had
already started playing drums professionally, and after living with his father
for a year, went on the road with tenor saxophonist Floyd "candy" Johnson's
territory band (which included organist Jack Mcduff).
At just 20 years old, Thigpen was stranded in New York City when Johnson went
with pianist Count Basie's newly formed big band. Thigpen joined trumpeter
Cootie Williams at the Savoy Ballroom and played the R&B circuit with Williams
in the south. He was drafted into the army from there...
