-Release Notes:
The Orchestra had its debut at the Vossajazz festival in Norway in 1992,
as a further step in Jon Balkes work to investigate the orchestral traditions
of jazz, after the success of the mini big band ôOslo 13ö.
The idea was to include a large percussion group and a string quartet,to widen
the palette of sound and possibilities.
The CDÆs ôAnti-therapyö andöOff balanceö(OSLO 13 on Odin records),
"Nonsentration" and ôFurtherö ( on ECM records) are good examples of this
development.
The orchestra has toured the whole world with different lineupÆs, and has
enjoyed collaborations with outstanding players like Marilyn Mazur and Rubem
Dantas, the Cikada String Quartet, and
vocalist Anneli Drecker, to mention a few.
The bands history includes the stage performance ôSpinnö with dancer Isnel Da
Silveira, and video artist Kjell Bjorgeengen, in 1994, and ôXPLO 97ö : a multi
media collaboration with dancer Giorgio Rossi of Italy. From 2006 the orchestra
has involved Bjarte Eike, an extraordinary baroque player, and from this
collaboration a new direction has developed, which is an original form of
polyphonic rythmic music.
