ôI see things in a funny way,ö Bertie Blackman says. ôI come from a family of
painters, so everything I do is pretty visual. You can see and feel my music.ö
Bertie burst onto the Australian music scene in 2004. Her stunning single
æFavourite JeansÆ was a statement of intent. In a pop world filled with fashion
followers, Bertie is forging her own path. She later explained æFavourite
JeansÆ: ôWith everything being so trend-driven, thereÆs so much pressure to look
fabulous à for me, walking out in my favourite splattered and worn jeans is my
way of staying true to who I am.ö æFavourite JeansÆ became BertieÆs radio
breakthrough, and she was dubbed ôAustraliaÆs underground queenö.
Her debut album, Headway, was a folk-inspired adventure, powered by BertieÆs
acoustic guitar. The follow-up, 2006Æs Black, saw Bertie armed with an electric
guitar and delivering some grittier sounds. The Sydney songstress says, ôI
always trust my instinctö.
For her third album, Secrets & Lies, Bertie traded her guitars for keyboards,
exploring the electronic world. ôI wanted to do something more electronic and
not as band-oriented,ö she explains.ôItÆs dark, but also a pop record. ItÆs good
to make a pop record.ö

Bertie delivers pop music with depth. Her voice is seductive, her lyrics are
inventive and honest. And Bertie is a mesmerizing live performer. ôWhen IÆm
playing the music, I just disappear into whatÆs going on,ö she says. ôIt all
just kind of channels through.ö Bertie writes most of her music at night. ôI
live in my own darkness,ö she sings in one of the new songs, æByrds Of PreyÆ.
Bertie made Secrets & Lies with Sydney-based UK producer Lee Groves (Goldfrapp,
Gwen Stefani, Aqualung). ôWorking with Lee was amazing because he is so open to
ideas. I loved hearing what he did with the tracks. This is such a diverse
record.ö From the sexually-charged æThumpÆ to the deceptively dark æShout OutÆ,
this is an album of many moods. ôI wasnÆt listening to the radio or pop music
when I made the record,ö Bertie explains. ôI went into another world.ö She
smiles. ôI think IÆm a little nuttier after this experience. But making this
album was a cathartic experience.ö
Bertie Blackman's new album Secrets And Lies will be released in May 2009
