First of all, Higamos Hogamos is about as awful a name as you're likely to find
on the music scene today. But fear not. Look beyond the weird, clunky name and
you'll discover some very interesting sounds.
If you like MGMT and Animal Collective, you'll probably like these lads
(personally I think Higamos Hogamos are better than both of the aforementioned,
somewhat overrated acts).
On their MySpace site, the duo cite numerous influences including Brian Eno,
Faust, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk. There's also glimmers of Can, the Kinks
and German techno wizards Mouse on Mars.
As for the songs themselves, Major Blitzkrieg - the recently released single
from the album - is a grinding, pulsating instrumental track reminiscent of the
excellent Crop Dust or Blindness by the Fall.
Other tracks, such as The Creeper, have more of a glam rock edge, while Black
Forest Gateaux features a healthy dose of electronica.
Something's Got A Hold On Me is an instrumental crying out for some weird Damo
Suzuki-style lyrics over the top of it, yet its still pleasant enough to play
while washing the dishes or polshing a chrome kettle.
All in all, Higamos Hogamos are a reassuring antidote to the bland,
guitar-driven indie boys jostling for airtime on the wireless.
Good effort.
