Release Notes:
Rambutan is alias of Eric Hardiman who also does time with
Century Plants and Burnt Hills. This three-inch CDR consists
of a twenty-minute live solo set from the first Rambutan
performance in April of 2008. Hardiman manipulates a wide
variety of electronic sounds and samples in his performance,
yet the result is amazingly organic. His noisemaking loosely
evokes everything from fuzzed-out guitars to flutes, yet constant
feedback and echo keep the track firmly in the realm of the
mysterious and otherworldly. Hints of psychedelia, sci-fi, raga,
and drone all work their way into the mix as the piece moves along.
"Fallen Smoke" is at times spooky and unnerving, but it's never boring.
There's a definite journey plotted through the long track as the cacophony
(along with some sinister laughter) builds throughout the first fifteen
minutes. At that point, there's a break in both style and sound as the
sounds move into more soothing territory for the remainder of the piece.
For the entire set, Hardiman seems to understand just when or where more
or less or an element is needed to keep listeners interested and on their
toes. Perhaps more importantly, these thoughtful shifts make this recording
worth examining on repeated spins.
