"I wrote this next song when I was 15 and had broken up with my first
girlfriend. That was a week ago..."
Allow us to introduce Jasper Erkens, 16 and unstoppable. Sturm und Drang from
Diest: a guitar for his 11th birthday, writing his own songs at 12, first
concert at 13, first ex-girlfriend at 14 and silver medal and audience prize in
HUMO Magazine's Rock Rally 2008 at 15.
Since then, things have taken an impressive and lightning-fast course. The guy
with the widest smile of his generation is playing opening sets for
international stars like Adele, Colbie Callait, Scott Matthew and Chris
Thompson, jams with Elliot Murphy, and performs in hallowed halls like the
Ancienne Belgique, Nijdrop, De Handelsbeurs, Petrol, Het Depot,Velinx and Lotto
Arena (Antwerp).
Moreover, his cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" has effortlessly won everyone
over, and not least the people at Studio Brussels who included it in their
must-have double CD "Rendez Vous".
Jasper Erkens writes a lot of songs, and they sound much more adult than one
might expect knowing his age. Not surprising, since the young man spoons up
helpings of Damien Rice, Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley, and gets the young Bowie
for dessert.
March 23th 2009 will be a Major Event Day: the release of his first CD. The
curly-haired kid from Kaggevinne, along with Fritz Sundermann (Sioen, Elisa
Waut, Junior Jazz, California Sunshine and others), worked hard on the numbers
for his debut album. "It's got to be good, from the first note" says Erkens.
"Because idealy I want to convince the world. Its that simple."
