| | The second 12" sampler for the "Way Of The | |
| | Samurai" project brings together the two | |
| | leading New Zealand Drum n Bass production | |
| | heavyweights on one release for the first | |
| | time ever. The Upbeats and State Of Mind have | |
| | both taken the world by storm with their | |
| | innovative and unique approaches to music in | |
| | the last five years. The Upbeats are busy | |
| | finishing off their sophomore LP "Big | |
| | Skeleton", while State Of Mind has just | |
| | released their "Faster Than Light" LP to | |
| | worldwide critical acclaim. Both of these | |
| | unstoppable musical forces took time out to | |
| | deliver exclusive weaponry for the Samurai | |
| | LP. "SFX" was the last tune signed for this | |
| | project, but may just be the one that leaves | |
| | the deepest dent on the dancefloor. The | |
| | percussive intro is a familiar, but twisted | |
| | pathway to the trademark riff that rises into | |
| | the breakdown. The groove that rolls out of | |
| | the drop is a gnarled funk that stutters all | |
| | over itself, with the gnawing bassline being | |
| | the glue that brings it back to a uniform | |
| | direction. It's impossible to name a tune | |
| | that sounds even remotely like "SFX" and we | |
| | are very proud to have it on this project. | |
| | "Dead Eye" is not a tune you would instantly | |
| | think is State Of Mind, but stepping outside | |
| | their comfort zone is something the boys have | |
| | been doing a lot of lately. It has worked | |
| | well with "Dead Eye", with the main point of | |
| | difference here being the razor sharp beats | |
| | that nail the heart of this tune to the | |
| | floor. While winding atmos, and subtle but | |
| | poignant riffs and pads constantly change the | |
| | momentum of the tune, the sub bass is the | |
| | silent assassin here. We advise a close eye | |
| | on the low end eq when "Dead Eye" announces | |
| | its arrival. A potent tour de force of New | |
| | Zealand Drum and Bass production from its 2 | |
| | largest players, this 12" has had DJ support | |
| | from, Klute, Dieselboy, Pendulum, Ed Rush & | |
| | Optical, Friction, Noisia, Spectrasoul, | |
| | Logistics, Empress and many more. | |
