Richard d james needs help. he need not worry though; his good
friends v/vm have come to the rescue with their fourth installment
in the helpaphextwin series, a collection of the previous releases
with some bonus material thrown in for good measure. if you
listened to any of the old HAT cds then you will know what to
expect from this release: 20 tracks of v/vm butchered aphex mess,
all with a running theme of wealth/money, something that mr twin
must have pouring out of his nose at the moment.
The album gets started with "WINDuckyQuaCKer" , a track that opened
HAT1, and as the name suggests it's a sloshed up version of
windowlicker, nothing too elaborate, but acts as a nice intro to
the album coupled with the second track "bouncing brinnington
meat+hag0balls".
Things get interesting on the third track as abba's "money money
money" is put into a food blender and the results liberally spread
over a mashed up version of windowlicker, wicked track. however
well these initial tracks serve as an introduction to the album,
they cannot prepare you for the insanity that is "druNQs". I find
this track impossible to concentrate on in any way, there is just
too much going on at the same time. that isn't to say it doesn't
make an enjoyable listen though; it's like listening to every
"hard" track on drukqs at the same time at varying speeds, whilst
trying to escape from a tumble dryer. Standout track for me.
it's a shame this idea of mashing up multiple aphex tracks
simultaneously is not explored further on the disc because it makes
a really interesting listen, the only other one (that i can tell)
being "laughing all the way to his TANK". if its fucked up stuff
you are after, though, you won't be let down. "MOnE(y) 4 n0THING"
is the noisy bit at the end of 54 cyrmu beats made angrier , v/vm
somehow cutting it up and turning it into an absolute noiseparty,
any sense of ryhthm from the original track is lost and all you are
left with is massive scrapes of noise with short bursts of old
pop/soul tracks. Cool.
Another fine piece of hell sound is v/vm's take on ventolin,
"ventolyyn hurricane higMax/2" where a high pitch fights with the
huge metallic clashes that made up the original track, this is
painful.
There are some nice atmospheric tracks on here too though, "wartHOG
pancake" is one of the piano pieces from drukqs (can't work out
which one) given a darker, spookier twist. "belt EE" is actually
quite pretty, I think this is v/vm's reworking of 'come on you
slags', although it sounds nothing like it; "boots'N'skirt
stockport-beef/style" is v/vm's other take on this track, and being
a thoroughly messed up affair, the two seem go from one extreme to
the other.
There is also the scarily quiet "lonely bank vault_beef wank" and
"Did u do or did you don't (fuck off MCPS twat mix)" to please
those who are after some darker, quieter material.
The track "flim (crap animal acoustic recording)" seems to retain
very little from the original, and unless this uses an aphex track
I have never heard before it sounds as though v/vm have created a
lot of the sounds themselves.
"a[hex quitACIDmi/x" parodies richard's supposed quit from music,
and his return a few years later.
The cd finishes on "this is foR you RICKy xx", a track which is a
heartfelt message to mr james from his friends at v/vm, slightly
modifying the already excellent "crossroads" by blazin squad to
close the album on a sentimental note.
If you are a fan of aphex twin, v/vm, or both, this album is worth
a listen. v/vm are really kind to go to such extents as this to
help a friend in need, so if you enjoy it, be sure to buy it, aphex
twin really needs your help.
