▓████▓▌ Hancock--Ahmad Jamal nonetheless remains one of the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ most influential of jazz instrumentalists, famously ▓▌
▓████▓▌ inspiring none other than Miles Davis with Jamal's ▓▌
▓████▓▌ use of space, not to mention Keith Jarrett, Bill ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Charlap and Kenny Barron. Jamal's latest album, In ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Search Of...Momentum, presents Jamal once again in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the piano trio context, which he helped define. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ While other pianists have long noted JamalÆs ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ability to orchestrate from the keyboard, using the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ entire possible sonic spectrum, as well as his ▓▌
▓████▓▌ attention to touch and dynamics, his extraordinary ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ability becomes even more clear on In Search ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Of...Momentum. Rather than stretching out lines and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ creating feeling from the absence of sound, as well ▓▌
▓████▓▌ as from the presence of sound, as Jamal did in the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ 1950's, this time out Jamal turns in a virtuoso ▓▌
▓████▓▌ performance that leaves less to the imagination. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Declarative rather than implicit, Jamal starts with ▓▌
▓████▓▌ an aggressive introduction to "In Search Of" and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ doesn't lag for the next 58 minutes. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Always a discriminating judge of bass and drums ▓▌
▓████▓▌ players, Jamal has found the contemporaries equal ▓▌
▓████▓▌ to the task of accompanying him: James Cammack and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Idris Muhammad. As swinging and in the pocket as ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ever, Jamal's trio is more than a pleasure to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ listen to; it's a privilege. With his unrestrained ▓▌
▓████▓▌ use of the bass clef for pronouncing the direction ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of his tunes, Jamal makes clear that he is at the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ height of his career, as energetic and creative as ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ever. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Jamal's last CD, Olympia 2000, featured legendary ▓▌
▓████▓▌ tenor saxman George Coleman in concert with JamalÆs ▓▌

▓████▓▌ appreciate hearing Jamal and Coleman work together, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ but Jamal slipped into the role of accompanist as ▓▌
▓████▓▌ often as leader. Now, In Search Of...Momentum, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ recorded digitally in the studio as Jamal played a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Steinway grand piano, provides new appreciation for ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Jamal's inimitable talent. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Even a ballad like "I've Never Been In Love Before" ▓▌
▓████▓▌ assumes classical proportions as Jamal introduces ▓▌
▓████▓▌ it in a fugue-like sort of way, an alteration of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the melody being implied through rippling eighth ▓▌
▓████▓▌ notes. While one could expect the song to be fairly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ straightforward, with harmonic shifting under the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ well-known melody, Jamal takes his time to develop ▓▌
▓████▓▌ it with halting and then corcuscating ▓▌
▓████▓▌ investigations of the song's meaning, octaves ▓▌
▓████▓▌ left-hand descents opposing shimmering arpeggios at ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the extreme top of the keyboard. On Jamal's tune ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Whisperings," now-deceased singer O.C. Smith sings ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the words written by Aziza Miller, marking the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ final recorded appearance of the singer of the hit ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Little Green Apples." ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Attentive as always to the melody, and to narrative ▓▌
