this is the debut release from clyde aka clive astin. he will be a
new name to most, but as one of derby's hidden musical talents,
he's already made musical ripples with his remix work. his version
of atjazz's 'story' (mant001) way back in '96 lad to him remixing
mikeal fitzpatrick's 'wish' on yellow productions. he appeared on
mantis again, this time with a shadowy and anxious mix of kimbu
kimra's 'raise the dead' (manto06). to many this was the hidden
gem of that release. more recently he's reworked charles webster's
song 'ready' from the album 'born on the 24h of july' and also for
charles' new label miso, on 'sumatra' by high skies (misoo03).
here at mantis recordings, we've spent years trying to convince
him to give us more of his distinct style of music and have
finally persuaded him to write an album. you have a limited promo
copy of the first 12", entitled 'serve it up'. the track features
the magnificent capitol a, the san francisco based rapper who is
probably best known for his work on king britt's sylk130 project
and for his guest appearance on the jazzanova album last year.
he's currently working on his solo album and the tracks that we've
heard are amazing. backing vocals coma courtesy of jane hamilton,
who is the vocalist with mantis artist magic number and also
appears on the slope album 'm'.
the original version has been co-produced with atjazz and is a
kinda uptempo hip hop cut with a hint of booty bass. the flowing
rhymes of capitol a tell a familiar tale of a night out at the
club and will strike a chord with many dancefloors. the rap is
complimented perfectly by the responding vocals of jane.
brooks has re-used and abused the track in his own hiphouse image
and from the few cdr airings of this, it seems set to improve the
sax life of aven the most unsightly of clubbers.
the flipside has two re-interpretations by tony 'wah-chu-ku'. as
half of the superb attica blues, his reputation as both a producer
and dj is huge. his label nepa always delivers the goods and his
remix of jazzanova's 'that night' is considered by many to be a
classic. included on this 12" are his vocal mix and, as the beats
were so phat, an alternate instrumental version. a second limited
12" will include yet another wah-chu-ku mix, a more downbeat clyde
version and a couple more dj friendly surprises.
