With veering tones and unpredictable rhythms, the surreal
robot-dancemusic of Rikki Pixxs is soft though increasingly
frenetic. As if someone were randomly pushing buttons on a sonic
MixMasterÖ, Thin Arms' elastic groove goes d'n'b, then goes dub,
goes rock, and generally goes wacky. Crazily blurting/beating Out
Clean gets funky in every sense of the word.
Vanilla Shy showers its bass-like groove with interestingly
sputtery percussives. In an unexpected shift, Distokide (6:45)
breaks down assorted jangling guitar sounds, skewing the strands in
unusual directions, then injecting rata-tata-tatting rhythms. The
cool bounce-and-drone notes of King of Taste go all buzzy in the
latter movements of their churning beat-dance.
The drunkenly slurred notes of herring are battered by spastic
drum-n-bass hits. Swishy reverberations flow from Coffee Soup
(reprise) (0:59) just before closing number Feel My Boots steps out
with a final blast of drum-impaled dreamtones.
Whimsical fun or nerve-grating? It depends upon when I hear The
Great Rubber Audio... sometimes all the over-activity is a little
much, despite the obvious skill involved in these unique
constructions. Overall though I admire Vytear's work; too
noticeable to be too ambient, but certainly perky!
