Skyler McGlothlin, aka Nautilis, aims to achieve one main goal in
his work-DIVERSITY. It was his college years at University of North
Texas where he truly began experimenting with his ideas of musical
diversity studying as a classical Alto saxophonist and later
developing a concentration in Advanced Audio and Multimedia. He
seeks out projects allowing him to experiment with a variety of new
sounds. Over the past year, he has strongly focused on IDM
(Intelligent Dance Music) electronic compositions where many of his
compositions are beat oriented with numerous melodic textures. He
feels the rhythmic aspect of music is very important, but it is the
melodic aspect that truly communicates the emotions and expressions
much more effectively.
McGlothlin first came onto the scene with Coldcut's Re:Volution,
Space Journey Nautilis Remix from Ninja Tune Records, which was
released earlier last year. His latest work consists of projects
released on London-based Planet-Mu Records are 'Marufo 7"'
(Release date:12/01), 'Sketches Vol.1' (Release date:02/02),
this album and 'Sketches Vol.2' (Release date:06/02). These
projects primarily consist of 30 tracks that have been created
within the 2000-2001 year. The majority of the compositions focus
on the combination of intricate rhythmic programming and a
progressing melodic structure. Within these works there are
various vocal tracks where he communicates ideas through rapping,
singing, voice samples, and vocal instrumentation.
His strongest influences root from the early material found from
Rephlex Records, Square Pusher, Mike Paradinas, Atom Heart, Bogdan
Razcinsky, and Richard D. James. Skyler is currently working on a
project based on the emulation of a live percussionist with
compositions ranging from Funk to Indy Rock that have been inspired
by artists such as David Axelrod, Madlib, and The Poets of Rhythm.
Along with his record label releases, he has created contract work
for SUKA Motion Graphics (www.sukaexperience.com). Their efforts of
collaboration have produced 'Wet and Moist' - a short independent
film, and a training video for 'NetSpend'. These projects combine
the creation of music both with and without boundaries
Nautilis currently has record deals with Planet-Mu Records (London),
Seattle-based Imputor Records, and Systorm Technologies based in
New York City. Singles and remixes can be found on Ninja Tune
Records, Rephlex Records, Coredump Records, Tyke Records, Tefosav
Records, Metatone Records, and Chinese Records. --n.autilis.com
