│ There's a story going round, which I haven't been able to either verify │
│ or disprove, that Hans Zimmer only charged $ 1.00 for his work on │
│ Invincible, just because he and Klaus Badelt wanted so very much to work │
│ with Werner Herzog, director and producer of such cult films as Cobra │
│ Verde, Even Dwarfs Started Small and Nosferatu (a remake of the 1922 │
│ F.W. Murnau classic). It doesn't show, and I mean that in the nicest way │
│ possible. │
│ │
│ The score is quite short (about 35 minutes of movie music and 15 minutes │
│ of source cues), but it really doesn't need to be much longer. The │
│ score, which for the greater part is based on increasingly complex and │
│ --as the story progresses-- dark and gloomy string movements which weave │
│ intricate and powerful layers of sweeping chords, has only so many │
│ places to go before becoming repetetive, which makes this the perfect │
│ length: its not inconsiderable emotive power comes off best when │
│ presented economically. │
│ │
│ Of course a comparison with The Pledge would seem a logical thing to do, │
│ that being Badelt and Zimmer's first collaboration...but it's not. The │
│ Pledge is a completely different type of score, as moody and atmospheric │
│ as Invincible, but considerably less emotional and lyrical. │
│ │
│ In fact, the music is *quite* lyrical and romantic in style (evoking │
│ echoes of Beethoven, and maybe even more of Wagner), and is surprisingly │
│ subtle in evoking an emotional response (although there's enough │
│ testosteron-pumping drama in tracks like "Master Of The Occult"). │
│ Perhaps this is due to Badelt's mittigating influence as Zimmer │
│ generally tends to go for the emotional jugular, with as big a sound as │
│ he can muster, but this an unexpected --and very welcome-- change of │
│ pass for the Great Man from Media Ventures. │
│ │
│ Rather minimalist in scope, this score is an unobtrusive, but lovely │
│ little score, which passion shines through in such beautiful cues like │
│ "Visions" and "Souls". Sure to become a sleeper hit! │
│ │
