█ "Patriot Games: (James Horner) It would be a █
█ difficult task for anyone to succeed The Hunt for █
█ Red October in a series of film scores, but James █
█ Horner is one of the few who is normally up to the █
█ task. While not technically a sequel, the Basil █
█ Poledouris score for Red October set an expected █
█ level of orchestral and thematic excellence for █
█ the entire series. With a new actor as Jack Ryan, █
█ a new crew, and, of course, a new composer, came a █
█ total mix up of the series, and much of that raw, █
█ majestic power created by Poledouris in Red █
█ October is completely lost in Patriot Games. One █
█ thing remained the same, however: Patriot Games █
█ was a high budget, action-packed powerhouse of a █
█ film that badly needed a strong score to be █
█ delivered in its favor. Regardless of the new █
█ circumstances under which the film was being made, █
█ there was the opportunity for Horner to write a █
█ monstrous hit. Instead, we get a monotonous, █
█ Gaelic reconstruction of Thunderheart. Now, I have █
█ nothing against Thunderheart --it was an █
█ magificent underscore to compliment the █
█ spirituality of that film-- but Patriot Games █
█ needed an entirely different kind of approach. The █
█ resulting score is contemplative, subdued, and █
█ introverted, with no respect at all for the heroic █
█ deeds of the main character (no matter how much █
█ Ryan doesn't want to be a hero). Horner's music, █
█ beyond its obvious lack of substance, suffers for █
█ two reasons: first, it sounds horrifically low █
█ budget. In some places, we get synthesizer samples █
█ that herald back to the days of Red Heat. There █
█ are extended sequences of clanging, random flute █
█ bursts, and light percussive rhythms... a █
█ combination that could easily have been produced █
█ by an ensemble of three people. To me, this kind █
█ of score for a powerhouse film is unacceptable. █
█ The second major blunder is the total lack of █
█ consideration for the Jack Ryan character and his █
█ family. As it would become badly evident in his █
█ score for Clear and Present Danger, Ryan has no █
█ theme devoted to him... no sensitivity to his █
█ family. While his smaller role in Red October made █
█ such an omission more viable, Ryan and his █
█ family's integral roles in Patriot Games █
█ necessitate a stronger thematic presence for them. █
█ Rather, the listener is treated to a barely █
█ audible score torn with the occasional blast of a █
█ thud or clang." █
