│ One of the first jazz albums I bought and listened to over │
│ and over again. It's a tribute to the Duke, and as far as │
│ I know one of his last live concerts. Although recorded │
│ years after Duke's prime, for me Ellington's big bands' │
│ renditions of their great hits still have the same │
│ freshness they must have had in the 1920s-40s. Listen for │
│ the incorporation of more contemporary jazz influences │
│ too. Great quality, great performances...what can I say, │
│ this is a classic moment in jazz history. │

│ Blue Note), Duke Ellington's 70th Birthday Concert │
│ presents both familiar hits and newer compositions. On │
│ Final Speech/Satin Doll, Duke is as commanding and clever │
│ as ever, explaining to the audience that the hushed │
│ strains of "Satin Doll" are "background to this finger- │
│ snapping bit. And you are all cordially invited to join │
│ the finger-snapping. I don't have to tell you: One never │
│ snaps one's fingers on the beat, it's considered │
│ aggressive. Don't push it, just let it fall." │
