█ Evita: (Andrew Lloyd Webber) In the first of a █
█ group of Andrew Lloyd Webber plays making the █
█ transition to film, the soundtrack to Evita is a █
█ double-CD release of massive proportions. This █
█ score is diverse, foreshadowing cues from Cats, █
█ The Phantom of the Opera, and Sunset Boulevard, █
█ and those who are not used to the sharp █
█ transitions of Webber's style may find this score █
█ annoying. One song can be soft and heart-felt, and █
█ the next can be a electric guitar bonanza what █
█ wakes up the neighbors. █
█ █
█ Madonna's performance is impressive; she may not █
█ have the range of Patti LuPone (in the original █
█ Broadway production of Evita), but Madonna adds █
█ valuable attitude to the part. Her performance, as █
█ well as the superb orchestrations, continue the █
█ memorable aura surrounding the title song, "Don't █
█ Cry for me, Argentina." Antonio Banderas is also █
█ impressive, especially in the opening song, "Oh █
█ What a Circus." Jonathan Pryce offers soft and █
█ heartfelt solos as well; the song "I'd be █
█ Surprisingly Good for You" features some of the █
█ best music on the album by Madonna and Pryce. In █
█ this track and others, Webber employs his █
█ trademark sax performances, and these too are a █
█ valuable asset to the album. █
█ █
█ The downfall of this soundtrack is the fact that █
█ Webber never chooses a consistent theme or style █
█ --this is something that many traditional film █
█ score die-hards may not accept. People familiar █
█ with Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals know that he █
█ can switch from jazz to rock, from dance to opera, █
█ etc, from moment to moment (especially in Evita █
█ and Cats). As a play that moves from act to act, █
█ that's fine... and in film genre, musicals do the █
█ same to an extent as well. But never before have I █
█ heard or seen a music with as much solid music in █
█ it. Instead of taking a break now and then, the █
█ songs are jammed back to back, and the contrasting █
█ styles sometimes cause unpleasant shifts of mood █
█ in the film. █
█ █
█ I would have been more comfortable if he had █
█ chosen to stick with one style throughout the █
█ entire film, but either way, I enjoyed individual █
█ moments of this score very much. Sure, there are █
█ some annoying breaks in the listening experience, █
█ but considering how much music is on the release, █
█ I am content with it. My overall suggestion: see █
█ the film first. There really is no way to compare █
█ a tradition film score with a Broadway musical █
█ classic. This album ultimately succeeds, though, █
█ because of the strong performances by the █
█ principles and the massive orchestral █
█ accompaniment that often blesses the score. For █
█ those of you who don't think you'd be satisfied by █
█ the entire musical on a 2-CD album, there is a █
█ single CD highlight album that includes only the █
█ very best songs. The orchestral suite that can be █
█ heard over the end credits of the film is sadly █
█ missing from all the the CD releases █
