█ This double-disc boxset (with 48-page █
█ booklet, I should add) is in effect a █
█ limited deluxe edition of the new single █
█ disc album 200 Tons Of Bad Luck, featuring █
█ all the songs on that release plus a wealth █
█ of bonus material. Even in its abridged, █
█ single-disc edition this is a sprawling and █
█ far-reaching piece of work, and an exercise █
█ in baroque post-rock that goes beyond the █
█ more ebullient and euphoric tendencies of █
█ the genre. Instead, when this solemn lot █
█ reach a crescendo it's all somehow tainted █
█ with despondency and Joe Volk's delivery █
█ never ceases to bring a world-weary romance █
█ to the record. The opener, 'Burnt Reynolds' █
█ is a brilliant example of the band's █
█ inflated blues, sounding like Arcade Fire █
█ covering 'Comfortably Numb' after hearing █
█ some particularly bad news. After 'Time Of █
█ Yer Life / Born For Nothing / Paranoid Arm █
█ Of Narcoleptic Empire' delivers a █
█ mind-boggling nineteen minutes of prog █
█ spread across several movements, it comes █
█ as a relief to hear 'Wendigo' emerging from █
█ a haunting, Dead Man-style soundscape, █
█ offering a mournful oasis of calm. In fact, █
█ despite the volume of material and sheer █
█ amount of music to absorb (even on the █
█ single-disc version) the band do an █
█ incredible job of taking you on what tends █
█ to be referred to as "a journey", and you █
█ really feel as though some distance has █
█ been travelled between the start and finish █
█ of the album. One of this deluxe edition's █
█ great bonus recordings is 'Human Nature █
█ Dictates The Downfall Of Humans', a huge █
█ symphonic undertaking that rounds off The █
█ Resurrectionists disc. Night Raider has a █
█ fair few extras in store too, with the █
█ seedy, gothic polka of 'Bat Stack' standing █
█ out as a particularly entertaining █
█ diversion, segueing into 'Along Where The █
█ Wind Blows' which for all the world sounds █
█ like a Tom Waits song - even to the point █
█ where you'd swear that was the man himself █
█ singing, but instead its accordionist Matt █
█ Williams, who's credited with "tramp █
█ voice". Definitely one of the worthier █
█ 'special edition' albums out there █
