As the founder and frontman of Pop Will Eat Itself,
Clint Mansell helped pioneer the fusion of rock, pop and
rap which became known as "grebo." Throughout the late
'80s and early '90s, PWEI heavily influenced the
development industrial and techno-rock.
Vocalist/guitarist Mansell, born November 7, 1963 in
Coventry, England, formed the band with keyboardist Adam
Mole, drummer/vocalist Graham Cobb and bassist Richard
Marsh in 1986. After releasing several EPs, they began
to explore their fascination with sampling and drum
machines as evidenced on their debut album, Box Frenzy
(1988). Briefly signed to RCA Records, the band released
albums like This Is the Day...This Is the Hour...This Is
This! (1989) and Weird's Bar and Grill (1993) before
moving to Trent Reznor's Nothing label in 1995 and
recording Two Fingers My Friend, an album of re-mixes.
The band began to disintegrate in the mid-'90s; Cobb
left in 1994 and several members pursued side projects,
placing PWEI on extended hiatus.
In 1998, Clint Mansell resurfaced with a new electronic
sound, scoring and compiling the soundtrack for the
stark independent film Pi.
