▓████▓▌ album for CANDID, æWho Is It?Æ, to wide acclaim and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ this, her new CD has been most eagerly awaited. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The material on æSome TimesÆ has nearly all been ▓▌
▓████▓▌ written by Ingrid herself with a very strong ▓▌
▓████▓▌ narrative reflecting her continuing development as ▓▌
▓████▓▌ saxophonist, writer and singer. The improvisatory ▓▌
▓████▓▌ spirit of jazz is evident throughout the record ▓▌
▓████▓▌ whether it be in her finely honed ballads or within ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the frameworks of the band pieces. As she says: ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ôRecording is always a very exposing undertaking - ▓▌
▓████▓▌ you are making a statement, you are telling ▓▌
▓████▓▌ everyone - this is where I am now...recording your ▓▌
▓████▓▌ own tunes is even more challenging, there are no ▓▌
▓████▓▌ direct role models, nobody else has ædoneÆ them ▓▌
▓████▓▌ before, you canÆt refer to anyone for arrangements ▓▌
▓████▓▌ etc. I learned during the process of making the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ album (that includes rehearsals) how important it ▓▌
▓████▓▌ is to trust the other musicians and let go of your ▓▌
▓████▓▌ own ideas if the result is more musical. The thing ▓▌
▓████▓▌ that personally really interests me about jazz is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the interplay and the collective sound, when I ▓▌
▓████▓▌ write a tune thereÆs only that much I want to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ notate, the fascinating bit is when everybody ▓▌
▓████▓▌ starts to add their own personality.ö ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Her hand picked line-up includes cutting edge ▓▌
▓████▓▌ trumpeter Byron Wallen, saxophonist Julian Siegel ▓▌
▓████▓▌ with Nikki Iles and Karim Merchant sharing the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ piano chair. The title track Some Times is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ reflective of the album as a whole with its ▓▌
▓████▓▌ shifting rhythms and time signatures. Interplay ▓▌
▓████▓▌ plays a strong part in IngridÆs music - nowhere ▓▌
▓████▓▌ more so than that in Nuff Said between herself and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Julian Siegel. One of the two non-originals is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ LennieÆs Pennies interpreted in the Laubrock manner ▓▌
▓████▓▌ but retaining a Tristano-ish feel throughout. Her ▓▌
▓████▓▌ playing on this and Access All Areas might remind ▓▌
▓████▓▌ some people of Lee Konitz in his early fifties ▓▌
▓████▓▌ mode. Aside from her instrumental side, mention ▓▌
▓████▓▌ should be made of Ingrid the singer. On Chico ▓▌
▓████▓▌ BuarqueÆs Beatrice plaintively sung in Portuguese ▓▌
