▓████▓▌ He belongs to the pantheon of the greatest ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musicians Botswana has ever produced. Duncan ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Senyatso who will perform at the Jazz Indaba III to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ mark Botswana's 36 years of independence is not ▓▌
▓████▓▌ just a famous musician. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ He is also a man of history. His virtuoso ▓▌
▓████▓▌ performance has seen him become the first ever ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Motswana to be nominated for Kora All Africa Music ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Award. Botswana music maestro was born in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Tsetsebjwe 34 years ago. He inherited a varied ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musical heritage from his parents, since his father ▓▌
▓████▓▌ had Ndebele origins while his mother hails from ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Botswana. He became involved in music at Secondary ▓▌
▓████▓▌ School and joined a small but popular band "The ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Breakers of Mahalapye". Together with his brother ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Caxton, visiting UK mandolin player Simon Jacquet ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and others, he founded "Kgwanyape" band in 1985. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ They released their first album "Mephato ya Maloba" ▓▌
▓████▓▌ in 1986. It was re-mixed and re-released in 1989 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and the following year it was voted seventh amongst ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the world's best traditional music albums. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The album was later released on CD through Shifty ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Music of South Africa and sold well. Senyatso is a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ prolific composer, whose songs range from cheeky, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ street-wise Setswana rap of sheleng (once called ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Botswana's most popular song) to the more political ▓▌
▓████▓▌ philosophy of African Child. Senyatso went solo in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ 1993, when he felt that he needed to spend more ▓▌
▓████▓▌ time on his composition and repertoire. He also ▓▌
▓████▓▌ felt that Kgwanyape was now self reliant to survive ▓▌
▓████▓▌ on its own. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ His musical interests are wide because he can play ▓▌
▓████▓▌ anything. Early in his life he had an interest in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ soul music, which he said he would like to revisit ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sometime. His main interest is traditional African ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music with Tswana rhythms. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Senyatso has played in Botswana and South Africa ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and has appeared at the Angouleme Festival in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ France and the Austrian Raggae Sunsplash Festival. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ He also took part in a Literature Festival at Hay ▓▌
▓████▓▌ on Wye in South Wales in the U.K. in 1994. He works ▓▌
▓████▓▌ successfully with the South African folksinger and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ poet Vusi Mahlasela. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Senyatso is also part of the South African ▓▌
▓████▓▌ guitarists who form the "African Axemen". The show ▓▌
▓████▓▌ combines the poetry of young dub poet Lesego ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Rampolokeng with authentic guitar music from ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musical direction is provided by Louis Mhlanga and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ theatrical direction from distinguished actor John ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Mashikiza. The show took audiences by storm at ▓▌
▓████▓▌ South Africa's National Festival of the Arts in ▓▌
