There are no more four seasons is George Kentros and Mattias
PeterssonÆs deconstructed and recomposed version of VivaldiÆs ôThe
Four Seasonsö for violin and live-electronics. VivaldiÆs Four
Seasons consists of 12 great songs. But is our world really all
that similar to VivaldiÆs? Our lives and our seasons are
fundamentally different now from what they were in 1725, except
maybe on a psychological level. And the psychological level has a
tendency to disappear when so much of our experience of the work
has to do with Baroque practice, concert halls, elevator music,
and the cultural sheen in which violin concertos usually exist.
But the piece is still out there, and itÆs still great. George and
Mattias would play it in its original form if it were worth doing.
But they only play new music. So they decided to turn it back into
new music, by recomposing the work into a duo for violin and live
electronics that mirrors our own four seasons. Not to make it hip,
just to make playing it, and listening to it, relevant again.
They also switched around the order of the movements to accentuate
the way that the seasons tend to get all mixed up: we travel,
watch color TV, and have central heating and AC û not to mention
the environmental destruction we wreak on our planet. Besides,
when you think about it, a lot of our feelings for the seasons
have to do with memories, and the fact that one never seems to
pack the right things anymore. So this could end up becoming an
entire year in your head û or it might just take an hour.
