One fine spring afternoon not so long ago,
Static and Lali Puna's gorgeous vocalist
Valerie Trebeljahr came together in a fit of
inspiration and presented our little CCO
imprint with a perfect 5 minute stretch of
pop bliss. A fabulous follow up to Lali's
sublime "Scary World Theory" album, "Turn
On, Switch Off" unfolds with simmering drum
loops and shimmering keys, interjected with
Valerie's flowing, almost whispered lullaby
narrative and a spine-tingling cascade of
harps that flips your stomach inside out.
Just lovely. "Promesse De Bonheur" follows
in more crunchy form, an ethereal
electro-sizzle in slow motion that bounces
atop a throbbing bassline and sparkling
Fender Rhodes keys, like skipping stones on
glistening silvery water as the sun slowly
sets itself into the world. Onto the flip
and we find our man Farben, aka Jan Jelinek,
delivering his most understated work to date
- remixing the title track into a summer
breeze of swept jazz drums and space echoes,
all wrapping themselves closely to Valerie's
unmistakabley warm whisper. "Give Me Your
Loving" ends the EP off with the crunch in
mind, poptronix infused with electroid beats
and fizz, melodies you were born with and a
production aesthetic that could only have
really emerged from Berlin. Perfect.
