"Strange. That's the first word that comes to mind when
trying to describe this debut from They Came From The
Stars (I Saw Them). What Are We Doing Here is some sort
of prog-rock concept album about visitors from outer
space (I think), gussied up with modern day electronics
and synthetic beats. And it is weird. Very weird. And
I'm pretty sure the band likes it this way.
The album's seven songs bring to mind the Beta Band or
The Soundtrack of Our Lives, if those groups went into
the studio while on a particularly wild LSD bender.
Chaos reigns, to say the very least. Frantic drum
patterns compete with random horn skronks, vocalists
gasp and chant nonsensical syllables, and random
percussion crashes into the mix at inappropriate times.
It's kind of like being trapped in Syd Barrett's brain
circa 1969.
This would all be a bit tiresome if TCFTS (IST) wasn't
so much fun. Like Barrett, or Soft Cell's early records,
underneath the band's willful disregard of conventional
sounds and song forms, there's a delightful sense of
English whimsy at work. What Are We Doing Here is not an
album that takes itself too seriously. What album with a
song called "The Beer of the Gods" could?
The album's tour de force is the 24-minute "Holy
Mountain", in which the band layers spacey keyboards and
a free jazz horn section over a pounding, almost Daft
Punk-like beat, and builds to climax after climax after
climax. It's quite a ride. And when the choir kicks in
at around the 12-minute mark, it'll blow your
