Let's try to go back in the days, in America at the end of
the 60's. At that time the musicians got inspiration from
the scenario they were living in: students raising their
voices against the Vietnam War, protesting against racial
prejudice, claiming equal rights and sex freedom. Checking
the track-listing of "Folk, Jazz and Poetry" it's easy to
recognize the name of Sergio Mendes. He is featured in this
compilation with the track "Righteous Life", included in
the 1966 album "Stillness" in which you can also find the
rare groove classic "For What It's Worth". Another main
artist featured in "Folk, Jazz and Poetry" is Michael
Jackson, who gives us a marvellous re-interpretation of
"People Make The World Go Around". With this song you will
have the chance to listen to the early Micheal Jackson,
when he was a kid and his five brothers use to support him.
Regarding the folk scene, it's a duty to mention the name
of Terry Callier, who started to produce music in the early
70's. His most famous album is "What Colour is Love" on
Cadet Records, which featured the amazing "Dancing Girl",
recently sampled by Spiritual Vibes. Thanks to the
knowledge of Gilles Peterson, who signed him to Talkin'
Loud, we can enjoy Terry Callier arrangements nowadays too.
"Keep Your Heart Right", a song taken from the "Time Peace"
LP (1998), is a deep spiritual track which emphasizes the
brightness of this songwriter. What goes around comes
around. We've started, in 1966, with the versatility of
Sergio Mendes and now we close this short presentation of
"Folk, Jazz and Poetry" with the name of two contemporary
musicians: Rob Gallagher and Valerie Etienne. Both
founders, during the golden era of Acid Jazz, of the
legendary band Galliano. Courtesy of Valerie and Rob, we
are proud to give you two unreleased tracks: "1st Day
Summer" and "It Happens Quicker".
