Baaba Maal of course, is a huge star in his native Senegal. This
disc should be the reference point for anyone wondering why.
Stripped of many of the western accoutrements that have saddled
his earlier works, Mi Yeewnii is a gorgeous, eclectic record,
that finally sees Maal delivering on his promise as an artist.
From the pulsing drum-funk of Fa Laay Fanaan to the dare-I-say
flamenco overtones of the title track, with this record Maal
ceases to be an important Senegalese or African artist and
instead becomes an important artist period. Lyrically the album
is as broad as its instrumentation. There are the pleas for
African unity that should inform the work of any major artist
from the continent. There are mature, simple explorations of
love and the wonder that accompanies it. This is an intensely
beautiful reading from the depths of one man's intensely
beautiful soul. ù Rob Ferrier
