"Have you all ever listened to music and would love to
put some words to how you would describe it, but you
can? I will take the liberty to rightfully describe this
album, Sonogram's Arrival Lounge as "mood music." If
this were a two word review, I would describe this
release as "serene" and "tranquil." This is definitely
the form of electronic music that I prefer, minimal and
simple. The only danger is that the songs could run in
together, but that's the point! This is indeed lounge
music. This CD should be popped in and the fast forward
and rewind buttons should be left alone, simply letting
the music play.
The title track "Arrival Lounge" starts off the album
and is both the beginning and highlight of the album. As
the album moves on, the tracks begin to blend into the
environment and find a niche wherever it's played. I
attribute he subtlety of the album to the long synth
notes and light drums programmed in every song. The only
downfall of the album is track 5, "Topless Summer." It
simply didn't flow with the rest of the album and the
high pitch horn synth, reminiscent of some old Snoop and
Dre material, was quite obnoxious. But after that track,
Arrival Lounge picks up and carries it on home."

"While quite "musical", the tunes seems to represent a
vision of the "future" through a prism of 1960's
instrumentals... as evidenced straightaway with the
synthetically "exotic" rhythms of the opening title
track, then again in the robotic rhumba of hypnotic
hummer. Except for the boldly thumping rhythms, portal
could be some of that crazy space-age bachelor-pad tune
where brassy strands warp and sway against twisty
theremin-like organ tones. These elements and styles
resurface again and again...
The effects of dramamine are slower, woozier and
moodier, making me ready for the smoldering (in its own
obtuse fashion) dreamgroove of hovering the velodrome
where fluid hornsounds flow and pinwheeling synth
patterns spin. Straightahead beats and other disco-ready
accents scatter pixel dust across the dancefloor while
incongruously gentle flutronic currents writhe.
Lite R'n'B keys tweedle around a thudding framework of
especially reverberant drumbeats in mood ring. Blurry
swirls quaver through beatless soft geometry (2:11).
Bleeping starmotes blink in and out of the throbbing
murk which churns above lovely departure lounge (6:20),
to be replaced by elasticized chimes in this
most-ambient piece.
We've not heard from sonogram since since 1999's
heartbeat submarines (and to be quite honest, would be
even more interested in hearing from his Tear Ceremony
alter-ego). The sounds of arrival lounge are seemingly a
"straight" collection, rather than tongue-in-cheek, but
to have to keep wondering is a trifle disconcerting...
not that the tunes aren't fab in their own weird way
regardless."
