Release Notes:
Ben makes a terrific entrance sounding very much like a younger and
well adjusted version of Damien Jurado on 'A Steady Rain' with tight
bright flashes of acoustic guitar illuminating the dull thud of
percussion, his voice navigating the song like a ketch rising proudly
into the breeze. It's the sort of song that if you heard it on a
compilation then you'd immediately be hooked and would research
further. And if you did you might end up disappointed, but only a
little, as nothing else quite reaches the same heights, though 'Yes I'm
a Skyscraper's Window Cleaner' does manage to get up to just below the
penthouse with a jaunty burst of accordion and a sunny melody.
'The Science of Breath' is also a little bit of a treat, a languid
melancholy keeps its head bobbing above the waterline, there's a warmer
happier sound to 'Leaves' with a gossamer orchestra of strings and a
blissful melody that bursts out of the song like a bronco into a rodeo
ring. Pretty piano decorates 'Books and Boats' making it seem for a
moment that Josh Rouse is playing along with Sigur Ros.
As I suggested, the quality does dip in the final third, though when
you pull the songs apart there's always something worth salvaging and
when it comes to 'Shoes too Small' all the good elements come together
again starting with a subdued strum, the song is driven along by the
vocals until the drums and other instruments join in as though someone
has suddenly put 50 pence in the meter. Ben spent six years touring
with his band Ruby's Grave before settling in Glasgow in 2006. He now
works as part of the Lo-Five collective who may feel like a hi-five
after listening to this.
