░█▒ The electronic project VNV ("Victory Not Vengeance") Nation was ▒█░
░█▒ conceived in London in 1990 by Ronan Harris, debuting in May of ▒█░
░█▒ that year with the 12-inch "Body Pulse." "Strength of Youth" ▒█░
░█▒ followed a few months later, and at the end of the year Harris ▒█░
░█▒ relocated to Toronto, where VNV Nation opened for Nitzer Ebb on ▒█░
░█▒ their Canadian tour. After moving back to Europe, Harris ▒█░
░█▒ released only a handful of compilation tracks in the years to ▒█░
░█▒ follow before signing with the German label Discordia in 1995 to ▒█░
░█▒ issue the full-length Advance and Follow. Three years later, VNV ▒█░
░█▒ Nation resurfaced on another German label, Off-Beat, an alliance ▒█░
░█▒ which generated the LP Praise the Fallen as well as the EP ▒█░
░█▒ Solitary. Empires, which was issued with another European ▒█░
░█▒ distributor Dependent, and on Metropolis in the U.S., followed ▒█░
░█▒ in the spring of 2000. Singles such as "Standing" and "Dark ▒█░
░█▒ Angel" were club mainstays, boasting Ronan Harris' love for ▒█░
░█▒ pulsating club rhythms and his developing seascapes of dark ▒█░
░█▒ ambient waves. Mix projects Genesis.1 and Genesis.2 followed ▒█░

░█▒ keyboards intertwine perfectly within the skyscraping synth ▒█░
░█▒ goodness for a beautiful-yet-deadly tune. æThe Great DivideÆ ▒█░
░█▒ starts off with a fast tempo and some nifty rock-style beats ▒█░
░█▒ that are soon broken by vast electronic waves and RonanÆs ▒█░
░█▒ trademark soothing vocals. It's a bold and affecting track that ▒█░
░█▒ will most certainly pull the listener in with its emphatic ▒█░
░█▒ backing beats and evocative rhythm. In contrast, æGhostÆ is the ▒█░
░█▒ standout of the album both lyrically and musically, it readily ▒█░
░█▒ showcases how diverse the group can be. ItÆs a totally ▒█░
░█▒ seductive, dark anthem created with pop sensibilities and ▒█░

░█▒ itÆs heavy bass will burrow into your brain and stay snuggled in ▒█░
░█▒ there for hours. Here, the influence of VNV on many of the ▒█░
░█▒ greatest contemporary dark-electro acts in the UK including ▒█░
░█▒ Uberbyte and Modulate becomes clear. æArt Of ConflictÆ will be ▒█░

░█▒ æIn DefianceÆ takes a similar approach, attacking right from the ▒█░
░█▒ start with mammoth beats, cascading synths and sexy bleeps. ▒█░
░█▒ Lyrically this is the best song on the album, and it is ▒█░
░█▒ definitely one of the best things VNV has ever written. ItÆs a ▒█░
░█▒ simple formula, but one thatÆs incredibly effective. This song ▒█░
░█▒ is for Sophie Campaign and itÆs for everyone who has ever stood ▒█░
░█▒ up for what they believed in. This is one of the best tracks we ▒█░
░█▒ have heard all year and you will not be disappointed. Next up, ▒█░
░█▒ æVerum AeternusÆ is an anthem drawing on 80s pop and even some ▒█░
░█▒ rock influences. This one will have fists pounding and bodies ▒█░
░█▒ moving when the group break it out live. The tune will create ▒█░
░█▒ the perfect atmosphere whether you are on the dancefloor or out ▒█░
░█▒ in a large field somewhere, it may also lead you in to a state ▒█░
░█▒ of total euphoria...dangerous. ▒█░

░█▒ DonÆt worry though, æFrom My HandsÆ will bring you back down. ▒█░
░█▒ ItÆs a touching, piano-based ballad that sees all of VNVÆs ▒█░
░█▒ electronic shell stripped away for something that could turn ▒█░
░█▒ into one of their defining songs, right up alongside æIllusionÆ. ▒█░
░█▒ An intense feeling of loss and letting go engulfs this track and ▒█░
░█▒ sadly, itÆs something that most listeners will be able to ▒█░
░█▒ identify with, but there is hope within the captivating words ▒█░

░█▒ The final offering on this is æWhere There Is LightÆ and this is ▒█░
░█▒ a definite rock track with some live beats and classic guitars ▒█░

░█▒ nice change of pace and it serves a purpose as it ends the disk ▒█░

░█▒ sounds with dark and hard-hitting lyrics that take an informed ▒█░

░█▒ really break new ground except to head into slightly heavier ▒█░
░█▒ territory on a couple of tracks which may be met with fire from ▒█░
