The cover art of this, the first LP from a duo who's early
inspirations are sited as the "coffin dodgers and cut-throats" of
Bournemouth's skag triangle, features mug-shots of the musicians
looking like they've just escaped an exchange of blows with the
dark side. Mescalito make music that reflects a fascination with
the sinister, but which bathes at the same time in the bright,
white light of the near death experience. An essentially live sound
is only subtly subjected to any electronic elements, lending
certain tracks the folkedelia of Money Mark or even Badly Drawn
Boy, but cymbals and synths in turn give parts of the album the
sweeping, cataclysmic sound of the DJ Shadow school of hard licks.
Harmonicas, for example, combine with heavy-handed drums and
electric guitar on "Shoreditch Oyster". A tribute to the
neighbourhood that spawned the duo's deal with their label Tummy
Touch, but a lesson in the aftermath of a brush with iniquity to
those just listening in for a moodsome fix. --amazon.co.uk
