Nine Yards Orchestra (NYO) is Max Brennan and Paul Butler. Their
first release on Groove Attack Production the "I'll Be Your Dog EP"
(GAP 044) set the pace for more excursion into the land of freeform
funk and mutant jazz. The EP was originally released under the name
Nine Yards but the group was forced to change their name into Nine
Yards Orchestra to not get confused with r&b act Nne Yards signed
to Virgin Records.
The first NYO album "Our Backyard" (GAP 048) is scheduled for
spring 2000. It will be accomplished by a remix EP (GAP 061)
featuring versions from Ono Sendai (Precision, Tokyo), Van Delta
(GAP, Cologne), Needs (Needs, Frankfurt) and J.Rawls (Lone
Catalysts, Ohio).
Max Brennan is quite clearly emerging as one of the UK's finest and
most progressive producers. His complex and intriguing sound weaves
sampled and sequenced parts with live instruments. In his live show
he plays electric guitar, bass and keyboards with the sounds
generated by his computer. This sound is where Herbie Hancock meets
Buddy Rich and Brian Eno. Even the most ambient and laid back
tracks by Max possess an inescapable infectious funk element that
doesn't harass the listener to dance, but draws them into a groove.
A prolific recording artist, Max has released regularly for
Holistic Recordings in the UK as Fretless AZM and Universal Being,
for Peacefrog UK as Maxwell House, for Guilty Records with Aubrey
and as a remixer for Pacific Records as well as recording under his
own name for Sublime Records, Japan.
He explains that his approach to music has as much to do with his
surroundings and environment as anything ;"Maybe it's got something
to do with living on the Isle of Wight", he suggests,"It's out of
the way and hard to keep up with the latest scene. That's probably
why I don't slot in quite so easily but I've found it inspiring to
be out of the way - I do what I feel like doing". Of course the
Isle of Wight is famous for its hippy festival in the early '70s.
"My parents took me to that,"smiles Max,"I saw Jimi Hendrix when I
was three months old!"
Through working as a painter and decorator, Max gradually built up
a studio at home from which he was able to leave the 'gigging' band
scene and start to produce his own music. 'Sunday Afternoon
Barbecue Music', under the name of Fretless AZM on Holistic
Recordings heralded Max's arrival on the UK new music scene.
Further recordings as Fretless AZM and Universal Being ,(a
collaboration with Rupert Brown who had previously worked with such
names as Roy Ayers and Nigel Kennedy),were released through
Holistic, continually building Max's reputation as a rising star of
the groove.
A liaison with Dan Curtin and releases under the name of Maxwell
House for Peacefrog Records in the UK eventually led Max to send a
tape to Sublime Records label manager Manabu Yamazaki in Japan, and
in 1996 his debut EP - 'Omiga Point' was released. Another 12", '3
Tracks EP',followed and this year saw the long awaited release of
the first full length Max Brennan album for Sublime - 'Alien To
Whom?'- gaining rave reviews around the globe.
1998 was a very busy and productive year for Max with another EP,
'Old Codger', featuring remixes by Susumu Yokota, Rei Harakami and
Schatrax main-man Josh Brent being released on Sublime Records, a
new Holistic album ,'Oceans Of Light', and extensive touring across
Europe including a memorable live show at last year's Sonar
festival in Barcelona.
Max looks set to keep pushing the boundaries of funk and groove
with a new EP and album due for Sublime Records, as well as a new
EP and album (Millenium Butterfly's) for Holistic Recordings in the
UK and a the live soundtrack orientated project Nine Yards
Orchestra for GAP and live shows around the world.
